As a result of the widespread availability of minicomputers in the late 1960s, and microcomputers in the 1970s and 1980s, automation of mass spectrometer control, tuning, data acquisition, and data processing became practical. The reduction in both size and cost of computational engines, with a concomitant increase in processing power, cannot be overemphasized in the development of auto- mated data systems for mass spectrometers (and other analytical instrumentation). Certainly, the widespread implementation of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) would have been significantly delayed without the availability of reasonably priced quadrupole mass spectrometers and artificial intelligence based data acquisition and processing equipment.
SUMMARY
Ronald C. Beavis et al points out that it was as a result of the widespread availability of microcomputers that data acquisition and processing became practical. If not for the availability of artificial intelligent based data acquisition and processing machines the widespread application of mass spectometry/gas chromatography would have been greatly delayed.

Knowledge-Based Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems
Artificial Intelligence techniques are increasingly extending and enriching decision support through such means as coordinating data delivery, analyzing data trends, providing forecasts, developing data consistency, quantifying uncertainty, anticipating the user’s data needs, providing information to the user in the most appropriate forms, and suggesting courses of action.
