Diversity and multiculturalism are very important components in the workplace. It is worth noting that workplaces are more diverse today. Diversity refers to differences between people. Multiculturalism is deeper than diversity because it focuses on respect, inclusiveness and understanding. In the modern society, global workforce is diverse and dynamic. Every institution focuses at recruiting a diverse workforce. Effective managers focus on managing employees with diverse backgrounds. This is because it is linked to high productivity and success. In the general perspective, multiculturalism and diversity play crucial roles in organizations. There are four individual and organizational approaches to diversity and multiculturalism.
There are four approaches to diversity and multiculturalism. These approaches include a brand image, affirmative action, the culture of acceptance, and maximizing performance of all employees. Each of the approaches is described in several ways. The approaches identify how the organization value multiculturalism and diversity in the workplace. Brand image is an approach that focuses on the desired outcome of the organization. This entails getting awards and name recognition for the organization. Under this approach, there are components that elaborate diversity. This includes indicators of success, desired outcome, and desired end-result. The organization uses this approach to make people accept the company diversity (Griffin, 2012). The brand image approach focuses on the indicators of success in comprehending diversity and multiculturalism. The approach achieves this goal when the public has accepted the organizational brand. The brand image is enhanced if the company has several anecdotal stories. Also, achieving the desired end-result through brand image approach is essential. It requires that the organization has strong marketing strategies and good public relations. Affirmative action main goal is to create equal opportunities for the diverse individual. This entails focusing on equality, fair pay and promotions. Also, the approach ensures that the organization identifies viable candidates, employees and suppliers.
The organizational approaches to diversity and multiculturalism are essential. The management team in an organization understanding that is managing diversity require different approaches. One of the approaches is ensuring that human resource policies are streamlined towards performance. The human resource policies include salary hikes, hiring and promotion. Employees should not be discriminates based on their background (Griffin, 2012). In fact, the management team is expected to comprehend the discrimination laws and the penalties for breaking the law. The employees are to be promoted based on merit.
Another organizational approach is creating a friendly environment on the workplace. The management has to focus on creating a good environment that makes employees part of the team. These entails team-building exercises. Employees in the organization need to be appreciated and valued. This increases trust, confidence and morale among employees. When management and employees work together, it enhances multiculturalism and diversity. Other approaches include diversity training, open communication, as well as establishing diversity council.
The approaches selected are essential and effective because it incorporates the employees and managers. The approaches ensure that the managers view employees on equal measures. It eliminates aspects of discrimination in the workplace. Also, the approaches have the potential of strengthening diversity in the workplace, which leads to organizational growth. Application of the approaches enables the organization to attain the highest level of diversity and multiculturalism. Employees who do not see differences in race, color and language are in a better position of working for the growth of the organization.
