Venice: The City of Tourism
Venice, a city of Italy simply represents a uniqueness and beauty on this planet “Earth”. Tourism is one of its important aspect among other famous cities of the world. Venice city is one of the most beautiful cities on the globe that was founded 1,500 years ago and comprised of 117 different islands. Venice city is a place where one can easily find out different combinations among the ancient world and its designs (structures or construction) and today's advanced and modern designs. Venice is linked with approximately 150 canals and is composed of nearly 400 bridges. This historic and advanced city is divided into 6 number of quarters naming Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo and Santa Croce (Keahey 2002; “Venice Tourist Information”).
Venice city is situated in the area where there is a great amount of water located around it. Therefore all the buildings are supported with heavy and strong base including slender oak and pipelines that are constructed deep into the water for a proper and complete grip for these buildings. The material of these pipelines holds ability to withstand the pressure of and resistant to decay. The city very popular among tourists and is considered as the one of the expensive cities of the world especially during the season month of November to January (Keahey 2002; “Venice Tourist Information.”).
Venice is famous not only for its beauty and historic places, but the popularity of this city is also associated with the art and architecture that has been used in different areas. The Napoleon also likes the art, design and architecture of this Venice city. Venice is composed of a large number of art galleries and many tourists like to visit this city only to see these beautiful and historic scriptures that are made or prepared by well-known artists. There are a huge number of versatile museums in this city having large number of Italian masterpieces and different arts made by Venetian artists such as Giorgione, Rosalba Carriera, Pietro Longhi and much more. Food of Venice is quite famous, as well. There are many restaurants that offer such a delicious food at affordable prices (Keahey 2002; “Venice Tourist Information.”)
Different classes live in this part of Italy, but middle-class comprised of craftsmen and traders are most working (Stach, 2011).
Different Aspects Effecting Tourism in Venice
Although overview of the city of Venice and its different luxuries and comfort, we almost forget about difficulties that could easily affect the life of people and tourists. These beautiful areas are famous for the purpose of tourism (Stach, 2011). There are different aspects that could affect the life of tourism in the city associated with climate change.
Evaluation of CO2 (acidification)
CO2 is a dangerous element for any environment. Due to the existence of the great number of factories and availability of minerals as well as the process for their discovery, the overall environment of Venice is getting polluted heavily. Availability of water also plays its part for the purpose of evolving of COx gases like CO2 and CO. These are not only dangerous for the environment, but it also causing a great damage to human or animal tissues. There are numerous other significant aspects that are necessary for human and animal life (Tagliapietra et al., 2011).
Effects of Temperature
Venice has different time span of seasons that mostly occur in this part of the world. Most of the time, summer season and winter is considered to be the dryer seasons as compared to other seasons. During the summer season, the hotness and humidity is at its peak level. People always prefer those areas where they could get a cool atmosphere for their lives, and they prefer such products or elements that mostly protects them from the harshness of sunlight and hot summer. In the summer season, the problem that mostly occurs in Venice is not only bounded to the hot weather and humidity. This season also affects the skin, the overall environment and also, the overall shape and behavior of water situated in the city. This season mainly remains the dryer and consequently people like to take a shed under various shelters. They even don't like to visit different areas during the daylight and prefer to remain at their homes during the day. But, the overall scenario of tourism and lifestyle changes completely during the night time. On the other hand, winter season is also considered as among the toughest one. Due to cold and breezy weather, there occurs a great number of diseases and bacteria that could easily affect people staying or visiting quite regularly outside their homes. Both of these weathers or seasons are extreme at their level. Lack in food may occur in these seasons, as well (Keahey, 2002; Stach, 20111). There are many areas or places in the Venice city that are naturally so creative and adopted compatibility with the temperature and behavior of water compared to hot and cold seasons (Keahey 2002).
Biological Effects
Biological effects are considered as the most important one among other issues. This issue is related with ecosystem, services and society. With the change in the temperature of water located in the city, there occurs a shift or disturbance among the species living underneath the water. In order to locate a compatible water temperature, these species mostly travel to such places where they can get that temperature. Also, people perform the same act as the biological species do. Transferring of locations mostly happen between animals and human beings during the tough situations. Change in temperature also plays its role on the structure and behavior of parasites acting in various living bodies. This change may bring some parasites a death note but some parasites act differently according to this change. The temperature change also affects the reproductive system of living organisms (Tagliapietra et al., 2011).
The term Alpine areas are referred for those areas where many humans and underground species are living together. This change in temperature or weather is not only related to Italy (Venice) but it could be seen all over the world. Melting of ice, global warming, excessive use of artificial resources, as well as waste and chemical coming out from factories are playing their part in the destruction of this human environment and ecosystem. (Tagliapietra et al., 2011).
Effects of Rise in Water and Sea Level
The increase sea level is another important issue that could affect the life of tourism. Apart from the rise in sea level, there is also an issue with the changes that mostly occur at the foundation of the buildings and houses due to water level and water affect. Using bricks at the foundation of any buildings could be very dangerous or harmful not only for the structure of any home or buildings but also for the lives living in it. The water rise also bring a great affect to waste-water pipelines and drainage system. This simply decreases their working functionality and increases the harmfulness of human waste. During the rainy seasons, this water rise could become an alarming point for all the human lives living in that area. Rain drags in a huge amount of water pressure from the surrounding seas that causes great water waves containing having tremendous force. The home, building or any other equipment could not withstand against this water force. The water simply washes them off with itself. This water rise is a lethal and dangerous for all marine lives and the human’s environment. This is because the factories waste could be mixed up with this water and slowly, it could go along to higher seas causing disaster at a high level (Carraro, 2008).
Landslides, on the other hand, play their role in the destruction. The temperature change may bring some change not only within the sea level but also, above the sea level. Mountains and buildings or even the earth piece above the water keep on changing at regular interval due to change in the temperature. Venice so far has seen a great number of landslides that caused a large number of human deaths in it. Landslides are mostly very harmful for those arts and architecture buildings that are located in the city of Venice (Carraro, 2008).
Areas under Risk of Desertification
Currently, about 5.5% area of Italy is facing remarkable symptoms of the problem of desertification. These areas are mostly located in the area of Venice. Desertification mostly occurs in the soil on which agricultural actions could not be performed. These areas could increase the level of un-employment among the people of the city. There are many areas within the Venice city that need to be incorporated in the list of the deserted areas (Tagliapietra et al., 2011).
Venice city and the government of Italy is making their progress towards such ideas and planning that are essential for the development of this city. Government of Italy is making such progress and planning to ensure some protection for the people and make such thinking that is relevant for the protection of different art and architecture of the city. Great amount of cost is required for such development ideas and their implementation. Government of Italy is making such progress and plans that are very important for the development of the city in a specific way by efficient use of financial resources. The government along with the populace of Venice are adopting such thinking in which there is a proper plan and design for the protection of the social, human being, and water species. They are also focusing on the improvement in construction of buildings, economical state of the city, lives of local people (by providing them proper opportunities of job and other resources or facilities). Natural disasters that is one of the most important issues causing a great number of lives in the city and that could easily cause a great amount of damage both from economic and destruction viewpoint. Government is also making plans and thinking that is required to control the amount of losses that is caused by these natural disasters. Proper planning is in progress for making sure a protective layer for human lives and the marine life (that is for the whole ecosystem) from every landslides and water rise in their levels. These are the particular steps that are required for the improvement of the city and betterment of tourism. Tourists are willing to visit and enjoy the beautiful art and architecture of this historical city (Carraro, 2008; Ruoss & Alfarè, 2013).
Conclusion
Culture is very important in Venice city. Acidification, climate change and rise in water and sea level are important aspects that are threating the tourism in Venice. Risk of desertification and temperature change are also important concerns for the city of Venice and all the people living in it. The city government and federal government of Italy are adopting mitigation strategies and planning for sustainable development of the city. In addition, government of Italy is making efforts to ensure protection of the people, tourism, as well as different art and architecture.
