Narrative:
The topic of the research is to eradicate childhood obesity. A database search was carried out on to identify material that fit the description of the research. The keywords used included obesity, which is a state where the body mass index of an individual exceeds 30. Obesity in children focused on material that focused the effects of obesity in children. Material that contained a reference to obesity in children as well as ways to eradicate obesity in children was considered for the research. Material that focused on obesity in general without being specific to children was excluded from the study. Four results were identified from the database search that fit the criteria for the research. Of the four results, two were journals, one was a published book, and one was a research.
Gordis L. (2008) in his book epidemiology identified that obesity in general was a problem that was increasing in America. It also identified obesity as a contributing factor to other chronic diseases in America. The effects of obesity in children were also documented showing obesity because of lifestyle choices. The likelihood of a child being obese increased if the parents were obese. Obesity in children resulted in children being more susceptible to chronic diseases like asthma.
Mahmood L. (2015) in his journal article entitled The childhood obesity epidemic: A mini review identified obesity being a major problem in the country. Using secondary resources, the author was able to identify the major causes of obesity in children. This data is available in many heath databases and shows a co-relation between obesity and other major health problems. The research showed a relationship between obesity and chronic diseases like heart conditions and diabetes. Children with obesity were discovered to be more likely to suffer from these chronic diseases later in life. Obesity results in a poor quality of life for those affected. This study identified parents and teachers as having a very important role in eradicating obesity in children. Parents and teachers can set examples for the children with their diet and other lifestyle choices to prevent them from becoming obese.
Dehghan, M., Akhtar-Danesh, N., & Merchant, A. (2005) in their journal article titled Childhood obesity, prevalence, and prevention identified that obesity is a major problem in the United States affecting up to 11% of the children in the country. Apart from the obvious dangers associated with obesity in children, the study focused on various ways to deal with the problem. The study identifies prevention as the best way to deal with obesity. This is because effects of obesity can be lifelong leading to problems many years later. Preventing obesity is seen as the best way to deal with the problems associated with obesity. In particular, the role of proper nutrition is investigated in the study.
Hoelscher, D.M. et al. (2010) carried out the only primary research identified in the search criteria. The research was done in a serial cross sectional design targeting 1107 students from 97 schools. The aim of the study was to gauge the effectiveness of programs such as CATCH, BPC and other community interventions in reducing obesity in children. The primary data collected pointed to the importance of such programs and other interventions in preventing and reversing obesity in children. Community interventions such as education on importance of proper nutrition as well as encouraging children to take part in physical activities was very important in reducing obesity among the age group.
The topic of the research was eradicating childhood obesity. The material obtained consisted of both primary and secondary research. The articles selected for this study conformed to the criteria needed in order to give more information to the study.
