The issue of whether to legalize same-sex marriages has remained a highly controversial and debatable topic for an extended period. On 26th June 2015, the United States Supreme Court, in its ruling announced that same-sex marriages were legal. The decision complicated the issue even further because there was a section of the population that opposed the move. The proponents of same-sex marriages argue that when these marriages should be protected by the constitution terming it discriminatory if not allowed. Moreover, they also advocate for the enjoyment of equal rights and opposes any tendencies to victimize same-sex couples. On the other hand, the opponents of gay marriages maintain that the institution of marriage should be respected as man and women should start a family for procreation purposes. In this paper, I will provide a comprehensive analysis why same-sex marriages should not be legalized.
Proponents of same-sex marriages claim that prohibiting homosexuality rights is discriminatory. Nonetheless, they argue that the behavior generates a second class of citizens. They complain that same-sex couples are subjected to humiliation as their dignity is undermined. Another claim is that legalizing these marriages would ensure that all couples enjoy similar rights preserved in the constitution (ProCon.Org). Gay couples argue that they are denied most of their rights including health insurance and protection from sexual harassment from their partners. In defending their rights, same-sex couples have gone ahead to argue that marriage is not only for procreation. They cite incidences that infertile couples have been allowed to continue in marriage. The denial of rights to gay couples is a humiliation and also causes uncertainties to the children that are already brought up by the same-sex couples within the society.
In the traditional set-up, the institution of marriage has been defined as being between a man and a woman. The tradition is practiced in most regions of the universe and also supported by religion. In the book of Genesis, it is clearly asserted that man and women must come together and create a union that would encourage procreation. If people of the same gender are allowed to marry one another, it will present challenges in the future as more children will not be born. The human race has always regarded the marriage institution as a spiritual and bodily communion that takes place between people of different sexes. It is, therefore, important to note to instill moral values in the society by opposing legalization of same-sex marriages in our constitution (Andersson, Gunnar, et al. 82).
Same-sex marriages are harmful and should be opposed by all means. These marriages deny a child their real parents since they come from surrogate mothers. The best interest of a child is to be brought up by his or her natural parents. This notion is illustrated by challenges that children raised by single parents, or foster parent undergoes. A child of the same-sex marriage would not be genetically connected to both of his/her parents, and this would be serving to deny them their rights (ProCon.Org). Unfortunately, the child would either lack a mother or a father figure in life. Human rights activists and the proponents of legalization of gay marriages should soften their stance regarding the issue. It is will be of great importance to put the best interest of the child into consideration.
Gay marriages activists argue that homosexuality should be a civil right, and people should not be discriminated as a result of their sexual relationship. I think that their assertions are inaccurate as the same-sex marriages turn a moral wrong into a civil right. It is insane to compare the illegalization of gay marriages to the struggle to achieve racial equality. Most of the married couples have gone beyond the barriers of races and intermarried without any hesitation. The most important aspect that has been respected is the companionship between a man and a woman which respects the natural law. Homosexuality should be banned as it is associated with an insurmountable biological impossibility. Individuals of the same sex should get in clear that gay marriages are ungodly because they cause more harm to the society that we live in.
If the legalization of same-sex marriages is accepted, there are high chances that the institution of marriage would be weakened. The future generation would find it difficult in valuing marriage institution. Already, the institution of marriage is facing obstacles because of the high rates of divorce and also the number of children born out of wedlock. Furthermore, homosexuality should remain immoral and unnatural and punished under the rule of law (TPF Student Action). Such behaviors are destructive because they destroy the traditional values linked to marriages. The homosexual agenda is a dangerous one, and it might disrupt the cohesion and stability amongst people. I strongly affirm that same-sex marriages should be avoided at all costs and the rule of nature must be withheld. The advocates of homosexuality should change their minds and support the purpose of marriage in the society.
