The site and situation of any area determine the settlement and development of the place. New York is sited on the Coast while bordering by various rivers that divide it into five boroughs. The five boroughs are Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens. Staten and Manhattan are sole islands, Queens and Brooklyn are on Long Island, while the Bronx is on the mainland of New York (Wong, 34). People settled in New York from Europe because of the natural harbors and the coastal location. The nearby Hudson River provided fresh water as well as the small creeks. The Catskill and Appalachian Mountains helped in restricting movement inland. The communication and transport infrastructure in New York is modernized by using new methods of technology. New York is also a metropolitan city with people from different races and origins leading to a very large population unlike other states.
Los Angeles is a major city that lies on the coastal plain where it is bordered by the Pacific Ocean in the South and West. It is also surrounded by the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains. It is the second largest city in the United States after New York with a variety of geographical features such as mountains, creeks, hills and deserts. Los Angeles was primarily a desert basin with a river such as Rio Hondo, Los Angeles, Santa Clara and San Gabriel (Wong, 67). It is also home to some of the known beaches which also makes it an entertainment town. With a population of approximately 4 million people, it has both urban and suburban areas. The area receives diverse climatic conditions with unusual phenomena such as hot and dusty winds known as Santa Ana. Los Angeles is modernized and has an efficient transport and communication infrastructure.
