Frederic- Auguste Bartholdi was a young French sculptor who designed the famous statue of Liberty. Although it was constructed in Paris in 1884, it was sent to the New York City using 214 crates. The statue itself is fifteen feet tall but it is 305-meter tall including the pedestal. It weighs 225 tons and is popularly known as Liberty Enlightening the World.
The statue of liberty is a lot more than a mere piece of art. It represents sense of freedom, independence, and opportunity. The crown of the statue has seven spikes symbolizing that liberty should not only spread across the United States of America but also across the seven seas of world. Likewise, the sculpture has a torch in her right hand (symbol of Enlightenment) and a tablet labelled Declaration of Independence (representing freedom).
The statue of Liberty is located near a custom port where immigrants pass through with the hope of a new life. In this way, these poor and needy people see the sculpture as a woman standing in the middle of river, willing to help them. Bartholdi did not make his piece of art a man because he wanted to induce in his statue sense of sympathy and affection. Women are sensible and, men are stiff and cold. Therefore, the statue of liberty is a woman.
Moreover, the sculpture is composed of a very light blue color representing peace and harmony. There is a slight addition of red and yellow creating a contrast. However, these color shades are only added to assist the presence of torch in statue’s hands. The sky and river in the background matches with the linen of sculpture completely. Both of them also support the theme it is displaying. The pattern of the dress and linen is very natural, and one immediately notices the flowing of lines on sleeves. Frederic- Auguste Bartholdi has done an amazing job in constructing statue of liberty. He has taken care of every minute detail so that the viewer can sense the message sculpture is displaying.
