Education remains one of the most comprehensive factors that enhance the success of an individual in various aspects of life. It is through education that an individual gains the requisite skills and expertise that allows them to tackle various life issues in a critical way. In fact, it is through education that an individual develops a critical view on different life issues, which leverages an individual’s capability streamline various concerns in life in order to assure success in their endeavours. Secondary education occurs as one of the most crucial stages in the field education as it plays a critical role in shaping the innate career facets of various professionals. Even so, it is necessary to note that there are various cases whereby secondary education has failed to achieve the purpose it was indented to serve. As such, there is the need to reforms on various issues in the education sector.
Discussion
More importantly, secondary education has and continues to dwindle due to the poor teaching qualities amongst the teachers hired by our secondary schools to teach students. Worth noting is the fact that quality of teaching amongst teachers has an immense influence on student learning. Precisely, competent teachers are best suited to impart knowledge on secondary school students than incompetent teachers who lack such expertise. Evidently, the teachers employed in our secondary schools are not the most talented graduates (Johnson, 2011). This reduces the quality of education offered across various secondary schools in our nation. In addition, administrators across various secondary schools in our country are always quick to employ teachers to teach subjects that they are not trained to teach. These factors depict the manner in which secondary education has been influenced negatively by the issue on teacher quality. For this reason, there is a need for reforms on secondary education with regards to this matter. In a nutshell, enhancing teacher quality will be a decisive step towards attaining positive reforms in our country.
Another factor that needs to be corrected reform that needs to be implemented with regards to the condition of secondary education is the lack of student engagement. Arguably, secondary school administrators and other personnel seldom engage students on various issues taking place within the secondary schools. In fact, there is an increased existence of nerd harassment of secondary school students by teachers and other staff. Many at times, students must suck up to the teachers in order to be considered to be exemplary students. This creates a hostile environment that hinders attainment of different educational attainments set to be attained by the students. Deductively, the condition of secondary schools is often unfriendly to students who may be proficient in different academic concerns, but do not suck up to the teachers (International Conference on the Reform of Secondary Education, 2004). This calls for reforms that will streamline this issue and offer an ample learning environment for all students irrespective of whether they suck up to their teachers or not.
On another note, the issue on teacher compensation is another factor that hinders provision of quality education in our secondary schools. To be precise, the current condition of secondary schools is characterized by lack of competitive remuneration and compensation for teachers. This limits the ability of teachers to offer high quality education that is aimed at moulding secondary school students into competent professionals. Statistics form recent researches indicate that the wages of secondary school teachers in our country are low and less attractive that those of other nations. This makes it relatively challenging for teachers to sustain their lives because the livings standards keep rising each day. For this reason, there is the need to reform teacher compensation issues and upgrade the teacher remuneration packages (Maxwell & Rubin, 2000). This will go a long way in enhancing the quality of education offered in our secondary schools.
