A Photo Response Paper
What is hunger? Every now and then, people experience hunger. Perhaps coming home from school or from work with an empty stomach, a person would of course intend to find something to eat, perhaps even rummage the fridge for whatever is left from the past meals. Once that hunger is sufficed, one feels fulfilled and satisfied.
This is, however, nothing compared to people living in areas stricken by war, poverty and social demise. The photo presented herein shows children asking for food from recue and non-government agencies that provide food sources for the poor in several areas in Africa. Children experiencing such social and health problems have become a common vision in some parts of the country. Most of these children and their families become accustomed to living their lives within the limit with at least one meal to suffice their hunger for a day.
What constitutes the determination of the non government agencies to continue providing for these individuals is the fact that they are helpless, and they are seemingly situated in the middle of a chaotic society, giving them no choice but to deal with the situation and accept matters as they come. They have been accustomed to simply accepting what they are given and not ask for more.
I have personally chosen this photo because it affects me so much in a way that I sincerely think there could be so much more that could be done in relation to this situation that the people in Africa and other poor areas in the world experience. I have stumbled into one documentary presentation in one of CNN’s special programs when I developed a special inkling on the desire of being able to help out in the situation in my own way. Hundreds, if not thousands, of young individuals my age usually go to fast food shops for their daily food sources. For many of us, food is such an easy commodity to achieve that there are instances when we lose sight of how important this resource is for us and also for other individuals living on the other side of the world. Without such needed concern, we usually end up wasting our food. What if those food resources be preserved, saved for the lives of the ones who treat it as if it was gold?
As a young individual, I have personally tried my best to join in the process of alleviating the situation of those who are hungry in my own community. Setting up a small group of young individuals to provide sustenance to a number of homeless individuals in my community, I have realized that I can do more than what I have imagined. I may not be able to reach out directly to the people of Africa, but I hope that those who are affected by the works that me and my group intends to complete would be motivated to do more than what we are actually able to accomplish in our local area.
