2) In the story by Edgar Allan Poe, the tension primarily lies on how the character narrated how he killed the old man and how he was unable to hide his guilt in the end. Readers always want something good to happen in a story, and leading the story into murder and lies creates tension. It is similar in the Tell-Tale Heart. The tension began when the character confessed his plan to kill the old man because of having pale blue eyes which he called, “the vulture’s eyes.” He was always disturbed when the eyes of the old man pin him down that is why he wanted to kill him. The readers would start to question if the character is psychologically sick. The tension furthers when he slowly entered the room of the old man trying to be discreet. The tension intensifies that leads the readers to read further. The readers surely want to know if the character can pull it off coolly. Moreover, they want to know if the old man will fight back leading to the failure of the killing plan.
When the police went to investigate in the narrator’s home because of a sound heard by their neighbour, it was also full of tension. The narrator said that he did not fret when he welcomed the police officers in their home. He lied to them in a believable manner. Until guilt was too much for him to handle that he finally succumbed to the voices ringing in his ears.
3) One of the quotes that created tension in the “Tell Tale Heart” by Poe (1847) was, “I moved it slowly - very, very slowly so that I might not disturb the old man” (p. 3). It was how the character narrated how he entered the room of the poor old man. Poe (1847) created a heart pounding tension when he wrote, “perhaps he heard me; for he moved on bed suddenly, as if startled” (p.4).
