According to Marion (2007), there are two types of leadership theories in higher education; transactional and transformational. Burns (1978) asserted that transactional leadership demonstrates less effectiveness in education setting. The reason of this inconsequential efficacy is that leaders and followers exchange needs and services in order to meet desired goals. On the other hand, transformational leadership is more effective in the academic setting. It exhibits a concern for individual leaders and intellectual stimulation of followers. Transformational leadership gives attention to motivate followers and to increase their morale. It also aims to inspire followers to share the values and vision of the leader. Moreover, this kind of leadership believes in inspiring followers to accomplish great work following the real-life examples of their role models. In transformational leadership, the needs of the followers come first as their leader is focused on motivating them to become leaders themselves. Thus, the essence of transformational leadership is positive motivation (Marion, 2007).
Considering the above-mentioned characteristics of transformational leadership, the researcher will centralize the workshop on transformational leadership. The focus of the workshop would be to motivate followers to become effective leaders regardless of their position in education setting. Also, the provision of an ideal role model for the followers through story-telling and interpersonal meetings will also be the key objectives of this workshop. Through such leadership style, followers will be offered a unique chance to experience real leadership situations surrounded by challenges. Hence, motivation will play a great role to encourage them for leading others through an innovative and ingenious way.
