Management Reflection Paper
In my opinion, the first week’s discussions have positively impacted on my thoughts on what being a manager. The number of requirements to the manager grow very quickly in the modern world. Therefore, only a strong and ambitious person can achieve success in a career manager.
depending on the overall impact on the organization: active transmitter, performer, conformist, destroyer;
depending on the critical competencies: the problem-solving manager, the pitchfork, pontificating, presumptuous, perfect, passive or proactive manager (Rosen).
I take the position of lower-level manager now. As for me, I can be considered as a performer, because I work as a manager not for long. In this case, I limit all my actions in accordance with the instructions of senior management. Generally, it needs some time to study main business processes of the company before taking the initiative and making unconventional decisions. At the same time, I am an active learner with developed communication skills. As for me, it is easy to establish contacts with other people and support them. Anyway, every new day spent at work can help me to develop my skills and grow as a manager.
In my opinion, I should be more proactive and initiative. These characteristics are quite important for every manager who seeks to career growth. The great attention is given to such roles as leader and manager and how to combine them in the work. One more useful skill that I must develop, is effective delegation. “There are three elements to effective delegation: responsibility, authority and accountability” (Fleming).
Generally, there is complex of requirements that apply to the each modern manager. They are the following:
functional requirements – understanding the people, leader characteristics, strong knowledge of modern management and the ability to apply it in practice, competence, the ability to forecast economic activity, the ability to set clear goals, to organize interaction and to establish optimal control;
basic service requirements – the desire to improve himself and the company, taking initiative, using the strategy of effective thinking, physical and mental health;
additional service requirements – objectivity and realistic assessment of events in conjunction with the desire to know the opinions of others, flexibility, the ability to maintain composure in unexpected situations, to find the necessary information, strong knowledge of the technical capabilities of modern office equipment, the ability to speak clearly and briefly about the case.
I continue to develop all above mentioned skills, which are required in order to work effectively at the company. Unfortunately, I have worked for different managers, which do not always make good decisions and do not match the image of strong supervisor. Some of them are passive, another play the role of a dictator who does not consider other possible correct points of view. In this case, it is a negative experience, but it can also help to develop as a manager through showing non-standard situations.
In conclusion one can say that the manager at any level should be clearly understood that the result of his labor. There is a general goal in every field of management and the manager is required to achieve this goal in the set deadlines and at minimal costs. The general manager’s goal is how to become more effective for the company. An effective manager must rationally plan and analyze. His functions are to organize the process and ensure a good result.
