Strength in what remains is a book written by Kidder Tracy is a real life story about a man by the name Deo, who faced many problems like poverty, as well as deep humiliation after he witnessed the destruction of his homeland Burundi. In chapter three, Deo was deduced as a person who was afraid for his life and the surroundings. He did not like anything mentioned that related to death or violence. In the chapter, we have been told that even with his family, he could not bear the slaughter of the family cow. Additionally, some of the fable tales he was told used to affect him. For instance, the fable tale, “what killed you?” greatly affected him. Therefore, this clearly highlights how his childhood was full of fear. Chapter three tries to explain Deo’s childhood.
Kidder’s account of the story consists of three narrative stands. These include Deo’s arrival in New York in 1994 with less command of English. Additionally, it is evident that he undergoes a painfully slow assimilation into the western culture and society. In chapter three, some of the stories told about Deo’s early life portrayed him as a naïve and insecure little boy. Whenever he saw an airplane, he used to hide under rocks and trees. However, the reflection to his early life clearly brings out the fact that he had overcome his inferiority complex. For instance, in the first chapter, Deo is seen going heading to the airport ready to go to America. Even though he was able to overcome his fears, he alights in America penniless. Additionally, according to him, every situation was still dangerous hence was still cautious. Even in the plane, he was feeling alone since he knew nobody and most of the people were whitely. Concisely, the events in chapter three are a reflection of Deo’s past hence we as readers can easily connect with the first chapters.
