A phobia is an extreme fear that will not go away. People may develop a phobia after having a bad encounter with a certain situation, object or activity. Therefore, trypanophobia is an extreme fear of needles. The number of people suffering from trypanophobia is increasing significantly since the people with this condition refuse to seek help from a doctor. People with needle phobias constantly experience panic attacks, lightheadedness, or fainting when they come across two needles. This fear prevents many people from obtaining required vaccinations, blood tests and other medical care, which make it a serious issue. Therefore, the paper will examine how Trypanophobia is understood and treated in the different models of abnormality.
The most common type of trypanophobia is believed to be an inherited physical reflex in response to needles. This is so because most of this condition has this reflex and it certainly runs in families. When these people see or think about injections, their blood pressure increases and then plunge immediately, which makes them hear a ringing in their ears, see stars and feel dizziness. Many people with trypanophobia are believed not to fear needle as much as they do the prospect of keeling over in the doctor’s office, which make it similar to other panic disorders. A few of people have died after having this reaction, which make trypanophobia one of the few phobias that can actually kill. However, not everyone with trypanophobia has inherited this reflex. This is so because some fear of needles can be due to a traumatic experience when they had an injection or watched someone else be injected. For instance, if someone as a little kid was once forcibly held down to be injected, the fear may be restrained.
The medical model can be used to treat this psychological disorder. This model assumes disorders of any type to be completely understood based on abnormal biological variables. Therefore, tryponophibia can be explained in terms of a disorder of the underlying physical mechanisms such as physiological and biochemical process. This model focuses on the reductionism, which is a philosophical observation that difficult phenomena such as thoughts and emotions can be fully understood and explained based on a fundamental level. This is so because the thought and emotions like that of tryponophobia can be reduced to a fundamental level of biological processes because they are neurological event in the brain. Therefore, the doctors can treat people experiencing the trypanophobia by gradually exposing them to the needles, which make them realize what they are scared of cannot harm them.
Similarly, the behaviorist model can be used to treat people suffering from tryponophobia. This is so because the model assumes that such behavior is learned because it is abnormal. Meanwhile, learning happens via a process of conditioning and since behavior can be unlearned, this model can be used to treat tryponophobia. For instance, people can be helped to overcome their phobias by gradually exposing them to object, activity and situation that frightened them. By doing so, they will change their reaction towards these objects that causes phobia.
In a recap, typonophobia is an extreme fear of needles that can lead to death if not controlled or treated. Since typonophobia is a serious issue, different models of abnormality such as medical and behaviorist models are believed to control and treat such abnormality. Therefore, people experiencing typonophobia should seek medical help to alleviate the problem.
