The photo given in the assignment is a very important historic piece of art which depicts what type of art existed even before conception of the contemporary forms of art. This is because the photo is of a Roman Catholic cathedral named Chartres. This cathedral is one of the largest still standing pieces of architecture that are products of gothic architecture which existed in the 13th and part of 14th centuries.
One of the outstanding characteristics of this building that makes it fit well in the gothic architecture is the height. The height of the building appears to be very tall and this was a trait of all gothic buildings. This gave them a look as if to connect to heaven where its glory came from. Proportional to the height is the size of the building and the dome shape of the building. This was another characteristic of gothic architecture which was very common and characteristic to all building of the era.
Another aspect of gothic art that are present in the photo is the size of the window. All gothic structures had very large surface areas for windows. This made the buildings to have enough natural illumination thus required little lighting. The widows were also decorated with pictures which were religious and deemed to augur well with the buildings.
The aspect of pictures and sculptures was also very evident in the era. They were placed in the place of worship to make the place appear religious. The most common sculptures and other decorative elements were of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. This increased the heavenly look of the churches.
Conclusion
Taking a look at the preservation of the Chartres cathedral for all these years for it to survive up to date, the glass panes of the cathedral were always removed when there were political affiliations. This was mainly because the decorations and the glass panels were the most expensive parts of the cathedral and formed more than 60% of the whole structures. The sculptures were also taken to places where safety was guaranteed.
