The culture of Greece has changed quite a bit from early Greece, classical Greece, and late Greece. However, despite these differences some cultural tradition remained. By looking at these different periods one can better understand life during those periods and how they compare and contrast.
Early Greece differs from the other two periods because of its lack of organized government in favor of tyrants. While there was town or city government, outside law was not uncommon. Agriculture, trading, and merchants were of upmost importance.
Classical Greece had much more emphasis on law and government with a near direct democracy. A battle between freedom and subjugation was beginning to be of interest. A revolution against the prior tyrants was beginning to take place. The economy was suffering during this time.
Late Greece went back to a more agriculturally based economy. Free thinking was becoming more popular. City states began to decline and military strength began to grow. Travel was becoming more common.
Individual roles changed from Early Greece where human worked very hard labor, usually agricultural work. Only merchants, traders, and tyrants held much power. By classical Greece, individuals began to realize they wanted a bigger role in political decisions, revolt and governmental changes where begging to take place. Slave took over more of the labor tasks. By late Greece, individuals were encouraged to think, learn, and explore. Individuals had more freedom to choose their lifestyle although most chose a more simple form of life. Gender roles also impacted one’s individual roles, in early Greece women were laborers and considered property, and were expected to follow the men into battles. In classical Greece, women were one step above the slave but they had more say as to what happened within the household. In late Greece, women were more accepted as family members. An emphasis on family was more prominent.
