- Identify the research method used in accumulating the data which served as the basis for this article. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the research method?
This article is based on both theoretical research and practical research. The research has used the meta-analysis research method which is an analytical technique which aims at analyzing results of multiple analyses. The meta-analysis design relies on heterogeneity and availability of information. Its limitations are the possibility of collection of homogeneous information which is hard to compare. The accuracy of the results to be compared is also a determining factor in the accuracy of meta-analysis. It has an advantage in that recording methods are easy for easy interpretation. Another research method used is the experimental method whereby actual research is carried out to determine a certain characteristic. This method has an advantage in that it provides up to date information and gives actual figures of the results. A disadvantage in the method is the possibility of false information from respondents and lack of cooperation from respondents. This makes it hard to obtain information, and creates the possibility of inaccurate information.
2. Draw three conclusions that can be deduced from the graphs or charts presented in this article.
The graphs and charts reveal the things that lead to true happiness. Good relationships with parents and spouses, a person’s contentment with their lives, and financial capacity are among the key factors of happiness. They reveal statistics of people who admit to being happy with their lives, and the results show that people who are happy with their careers are happy. The final conclusion is that the journey to achieving a goal is what actually determines happiness, not simply achieving the goal. The tables also show that women more developed countries report to being happy and content with their lives than women in areas where great gender inequality exists.
3. In the study done by Lieberman and Morelli, what were the physiological and psychological processes involved in their study of empathy?
The physiological processes involved in Morelli’s study of empathy are greater activity in the medial PFC (MPFC). MPFC was also associated with civic engagement activities. The core neural regions activated during empathy are the anterior insula and the dorsal anterior singulate cortex. These regions are activated during empathetic responses, whether positive or negative. The psychological processes involved are the way we perceive ourselves and the difference in self perception from that of others also determine how we respond to other people’s situations. A person’s lifestyle also determines how empathetic they are. A person used to a life of luxury may not be able to understand how a person who has no food feels.
4. In the quote by Morelli, “Being distracted reduces our empathy for others and blunts responses in the brain,” what are the implications of this quote for civic engagement?
Civic engagement is the individual action to identify and address issues affecting the public. Civic engagement concerns decision making, governance and determining who gets what and how to go about it when allocating community resources. According to Morelli’s quote, distraction reduces a person’s empathy (understanding and sharing in other people’s situations). This means that his or her decisions are likely to be inconsiderate of others’ decisions thus enforcing inconsiderate rules on people and not caring about their implications. This is because their core neurons related to empathy have been blunted.
