Why does healthcare rely so heavily on biomedical research?
Biomedical research is highly valued and relied upon since it provides a basis for the foundation of preventative medicine and treatment. New drug approvals and various clinical trials form the basis of the use of new medicine, which is then used as a source of forming policies in the country. Medical devices and new technology that has been incorporated into treatment have resulted from biomedical research. Consequently, this increases the reliance of individuals and governments on biomedical research into developing new effective drugs that can cure diseases. According to Nabel (2009), most of the medical advances are because of biomedical research.
Importance of biomedical research
Biomedical research has many benefits to the society. The numbers of infectious agents that arise every day are numerous and potential to cause distress and harm to the human body are great. Most of the medicine individuals take to cure simple and complex ailments is as a result of long periods of experimentations that were done in the past in medical research facilities. According to Nass (2009), biomedical research involving clinical trials provides critical information regarding the efficacy of diverse medical interventions, which provides the basis for developing guidelines for the use of the different medical interventions once they are approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Factors that contribute to funding and supporting of biomedical research
One of the factors that assist in the funding of biomedical research is the need to improve the quality of all Americans. Health is vital to ensuring that laborers can handle their work, for a nation to be economically viable. Thus, reducing the burden of illness and increasing the life of different individuals, a nation can be able to be more productive. Thus, taxpayers support the biomedical research since it will benefit them and their generations. Additionally, the voice of physicians and other concerned parties on the value of funding biomedical research increases its importance in a nation where people still suffer and lose life from different illnesses (Nabel, 2009).
