1) Nursing calls for individual endurance, attention and commitment towards the career. The requirements for nursing do not only call for a career choice, but also a personal attitude towards the profession with the aim of aiding the sick. This calls for our attention towards those in need of help around us, far and way beyond. Following the nature of the job and having been in the healthcare system for over 12 years, I believe this will be the best profession for me to venture in, both as a professional path and an educational path for exploration.
My desire to be a nurse dated back to my childhood when I role played as a nurse. However, the enthusiasm to care for others comes naturally especially having stayed at my brother’s hospital bed side when he was sick, and gaining the experience. I was not only helping to care for my late brother, I was observing the doctors and nursing as they discharged their duties and wished I was a nurse so that I could do more for my brother. Moreover, my likeness and inclination to the field of nursing was further fueled by the humanitarian care my family received from nurses and doctors during the painful sickness and death of my brother. This experience gave me an awareness of what the sick go through and how kindhearted nursing care does make a difference. Consequent upon his death, I have the burning desire to help the needy. When I came to the U.S.A and I became a certified nursing assistant, the light ignited again. I am passionate about taking care of the sick; seeing the sick person in the process of recovering gives me joy. As a nursing assistant at both Durham Regional Hospital and UNC Chapel Hill Hospital, I realized what it entails to be a nurse; nursing care often involves dealing with the pressures of urgent situations, handling blood, working long hours, and the readiness to sacrifice some personal comfort etc.
Therefore, being a nurse requires maturity, natural aptitudes and enduring determination outside what the classroom furnishes. Moreover, my position as the office manger of Omega Healthcare Services fueled my passion for nursing; I helped both the clients and the workers to find fulfillment. Since I have been so much involved in the healthcare system, advancing my career in nursing is a step in the right direction.
Based on my experience in healthcare and an understanding of expectation of being a nurse, I believe it will be an easy learning process full of challenges, but dedication and love for nursing will enable me move to highest heights. This coupled with the desire to learn and know the possible outcome of the field of study, I feel motivated to ensure that I realize the successful fruition of my objectives in the nursing profession.
I have developed a strong likeness for the profession, and I believe it is through the process of working with other professionals and patients in the field that I will become more comfortable with the rising situation and challenges of the job. As I originally highlighted, I know being a nurse is a combination of professionalism, compassion and diligent in the line of duty, never forgetting the challenges nurses face with both the patients and family members. That withstanding, I am prepared and ready to the task. Finally, despite my interest in the scientific and research side of medicine, my calling and passion is towards nursing. Patient interaction is paramount in creating a healthy society. Translating the research data to clinical practice is important in ultimately proving the theories that are developed from research. I have also had a personal experience as a patient that makes me have the feeling and the urge to pursue the study more. This enabled me gain the functions and the ability to follow up on my dream of becoming a nurse as I believe this is where my passion lies.
I believe nursing will be the best choice for me, a choice that I will not regret in the future whenever I will be looking back as I will have explored the pursuance of something that I honestly love and enjoy doing. This will provide me the opportunity to succeed and continue exploring better ways to make the profession better and enjoyable.
2) Rewarding experience to me has been my experience with the healthcare profession. While in the health profession, I believe I grew more than I had originally been brought up. While working in the healthcare profession, I was able to interact with a number of patients who I cared for whole heartedly. I served as a nursing assistant where I cared for patients with different health problems. This position offered me an insight in dealing with different situations that enabled me grow both mentality and professionally thereby providing me a rewarding experience.
I remember at some point, I dealt with a patient who was difficult and very sick. This situation required me to offer my nurturing and caring attitude to help the patient recover as quickly as possible. Despite his difficult attitude and the insatiable demands by the family members, I stayed focused in my service delivery not minding the unappreciative attitude of the client. My goal was to ensure that the client was well nurtured and all medical treatments were performed timely. I adopted a proactive approach of periodically checking on the patient to ensure patient satisfaction. Consequently, the patient and the family members became very friendly and they trusted me to discuss how frustrating the situation has been on the family because the patient was the only surviving male sibling and they were afraid he was going to die. This was another instance to enable me grow as an individual and a professional in the health profession. Having to deal with people of different difficulties enable me view myself from a different spectrum. This opportunity was such a good period for my growth.
During this period of work with people of different challenges, it was an appropriate time to understand the need for patience as a virtue. I believe this is one of the biggest aspects of growth that I developed at work. The need to patiently work with individuals with different complexities has enabled me understand the need for patience.
Therefore, as an opportunity to work in the health care, I developed a greater sense of commitment and learning experience. This experience proved to be a rewarding moment for me as an individual despite the challenges and difficulties, I believe the job provided me an opportunity to fully grow and realize the potential that I need to unleash in the field in order to develop as an individual as well as help others who needed an urgent attention.
3) The pivotal point of nursing is caring for the sick and the well. This fundamental concept of nursing propelled me to engage in community service in my local church and beyond. As I stated previously, nursing is a combination of professionalism, compassion and diligent in the line of duty. I demonstrated my deepened interest in nursing, as I volunteered to service in various capacities to give back to the community. I believe that caring, which nursing represent, is an integral part of living, and any person, group or community that wants to strive and maintain existence should demonstrate caring attitude. This caring philosophy is my daily focus: at home, at work and at my local church.
At home I ensure that my immediate family, extended family and the people around me are well catered for. However, I virtually play the role of a virtuous woman who took care of her family tirelessly, striving to maintain the economic and spiritual integrity of her family. However, I also work as a manager in Omega Healthcare Services. This position enables me to look at the profession from both management and practical side. I believed I developed better management skills in this position such that, I feel fully equipped and challenged enough to face the profession. My philosophy of caring was fully demonstrated at Omega Healthcare; as a superior, I always go the extra mile to take care of both the employees and the clients. With me, there is no dull moment; I ensured that clients were satisfied and the employees were well maintained. Moreover, as a children’s teacher at my local church, I work tirelessly to inculcate biblical principles in the children under my care; In fact, I headed the children department in my church in 2006 to 2008. I worked had to ensure that the children were well nurtured spiritually by developing a curriculum that enhanced their participations and understanding of the subject matter. I also developed a program that improved the teachers’ better understanding of the teaching materials. As I socialize in nursing, I want to continue to apply my philosophy of caring by using Jean Watson caring theory to enhance my nursing skills, and develop an honorable relationship with my patients.
Since I have developed clear and concise understanding of the requirements of my field of study, I will ensure a direct and specific focus in my course thereby reducing redundancy and ambiguity on my part as a student. With application of the most relevant performance criteria toward the education on what I am passionate about, I will work with goal that are sufficiently ambitious yet reasonable to my field.
