1) What are some of the most significant challenges you have faced to succeed as a student? –
In my work as a student, I have had to face many challenges, but none more so than finding a way of balancing work, school and my personal life. I work as part of the management support team at Verizon Wireless, which is a very fast-paced job environment that is very demanding and rigorous. A significant part of my job is dealing with escalated customers, which can add even more stress and frustration to my current responsibilities, which also include overseeing my own team and being a point of contact for them. Because of the responsibilities and stressors of my job, it can be difficult to allot time for my studies, as well as making time for my friends and family. However, with a great deal of organization, sacrifice and discipline, I have found a way to balance all of these elements in a fairly satisfactory manner.
2) Have you ever needed that extra "push" from a friend, family member or co-worker to make the leap and go back to school? If so, please explain.
There have been quite a few times when I have relied on the strength and friendship of others to help get me through hard times. One particularly memorable moment was after an especially stressful customer service call, when all I wanted to do was just go home. One of my close co-workers, whom I’d spoken to before about returning to school, saw my frustration and pulled me aside. He just sat me down, let me have a ten minute break, and talked to me about my future. He brought up my desire to go back to school, and said to me, “If you don’t want to just keep taking calls like that, you should actually do it.” Somehow, that was the exact right moment to bring it up, as it sparked my motivation to return to school, and it has remained ever since. 3) What is your definition of success? How will/does Strayer help you achieve this success? I like to define success as the ability to make a demonstrable impact on the people around you. While money is certainly an incentive, I consider my greatest successes to be the times when I was able to make a clear, fulfilling difference in the people I could see right in front of me. Whether it is helping a customer get their questions answered, performing volunteer work, or making my team at Verizon more efficient, I believe that all of those qualify as successes. Strayer’s commitment to this kind of actionable success aligns perfectly with my idea of what a successful person is, and so I believe I have a lot to learn from this institution about how to maximize that success. 4) Do you successfully balance career, life, kids, family etc with school? If so, what are the challenges? As previously mentioned, I believe I have struck an appropriate balance between school, work and life. While I do not have kids, I take great pleasure in spending time with family and friends; I always make sure that at least a few nights a week are reserved for some quality time with the people I love. This can be challenging with the demands of my work at Verizon and my current school priorities; it can be tough to sacrifice this relaxing personal time with my own responsibilities. However, I gladly do it, and my friends and family are immensely understanding and helpful. It is because of their help and patience that I can even dream of maintaining this balance. 5) Why are you interested in participating in the Strayer Success Summit?
