I had always wanted to learn how to cook in general and this assignment was a great chance for me to learn how to cook an Emirati food. When I read the blog, the first thing that came into my mind was to cook a Blalet. I asked my aunt to guide me. Blalet is a traditional food which my family cooks every day.
At first I thought it would be easy for me to cook it and therefore asked my aunt to just observe me. I gathered a half of the ingredients that I thought were required since my dish could be served as a breakfast and as a desert. Every Emirati family knows it and probably their favorite traditional dish. I had requested my aunt to help me out as she knew how to cook traditional food better than my mother. She always cooked traditional food during Friday gatherings. As I mentioned earlier; I thought it was an easy task, but I had it wrong from the first step of gathering the ingredients. My aunt corrected me on the ingredients and gave me further instructions. I messed up several times that she might have thought I was joking. I did not know the simplest procedures such as the spreading oil on the skillet.
When I asked my aunt to help me out with the assignment, everyone in my family wanted to know about the subject. They got interested and while my aunt I cooked; all my cousins filled the kitchen. They watched us and burst into laughter. As they observed us, everyone wanted to participate. Each cousin made her own recipe and kept on correcting me. It was such a great experience making my aunt and mum proud of me. My mum said the dish was partially Indian sweet pasta and not pure Emirati. I learned a lot from the experience. I learned that we should never underestimate anything nor try it by guessing. Most importantly, I learned that we should remember heritage.
