Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “Hills like White Elephants,” is a detailed account of a very surreal conversation between a man and a girl held over various types of alcohol at a train station in Spain. During the conversation, we learn that they are waiting for some sort of operation, which the man repeatedly describes as, “simple”. The girl seems to make fun of much of what the man has to say. Their conversation seems somewhat surreal and is difficult to follow, because the story doesn’t provide much in the way of context for the content of their speech. However, it quickly becomes clear that the two characters love each other and care deeply about the opinions of each other. The conversation seems to frustrate both parties, though, and twice the girl asks the man to stop talking. It is clear that she does not want to pursue the subject at all, but the man persists in his attempts to reassure her of the simplicity of the operation that will take place. He also says that she doesn’t have to go through with said operation if she doesn’t want to, as he does not want her to do anything she doesn’t want to. The second time the girl asks him to stop talking, he’s just told her again about how simple the operation will be, and she repeats the word. “Please,” seven times in the midst of her request for silence. There could be any number of reasons for her to do so, but the most reasonable one seems to be that she has worries that he can’t alleviate by talking. Her feelings on the subject of conversation and his feelings seem to differ, and perhaps there is no way for them to reach a common opinion. The man then gets up from the table, purportedly to take their bags to the other side of the station, but it seems more likely that he was just trying to give her space and time in order to calm down.
