Since the days long passed, the African Americans faced struggles when it came to obtaining equal rights as the Whites. Even among the African Americans, the disparity between men and women existed. Through the realization that even to have a chance to succeed, the men and women of the African American community each spearheaded revolution as a team. As the women helped free slaves escape, provided education and literature to the illiterate; the men supported their efforts, educated the black man and peacefully agitated for their rights.
The struggle still continues and only through empowerment will our forefathers’ dreams become a reality. The youth should be a part of the American society, make a decent living, contribute towards future generations and most importantly be proud of who they are. Empowering them can start from youth empowerment programs that instil life skills, training and other useful lessons. The youths become employable and can indulge in entrepreneurship if they desire. The life skills help them integrate and maneuver in the society as wholesome and productive members. Initiatives that encourage staying in school and facilitate access to relevant and quality education is necessary. In order to enjoy lives envisioned by Martin Luther and Phillis Wheatley, youths have to stay in school. Resources and encouragement will ensure they do not miss anything or drop out. Building respect is another method. Young men and women should respect themselves and each other, only then will they value themselves; realize their uniqueness, identity, self-worth and potential. The African American community also has a part to play; theirs is key. They are the support system required to propel the youth to greater heights. The community imparts knowledge, guides and advises, agitates for fairness in opportunities and resources, and functions a role model for the youth. As a result, both the African American youth and the community will become empowered.
Part 1
I concur that planting the seed of success while still young is an excellent strategy. Education and foresight will undoubtedly grant the youth a much better chance of succeeding. Also, the future is a consequence of the past, and through appreciating and acknowledging it we move forward one step. Policies also play a role in the empowerment effort.
Part 2
I agree that African American women played a crucial role in achieving the current situation and will continue to do so. Their struggle was twofold; slavery and gender equality. On the other hand, the men shouldered the whole community and not just themselves and also supported the endeavors of their female counterparts. Therefore, a combined effort resulted in today’s achievements and a combined effort will empower the youth.
