The proposal will discuss the history of the Lincoln memorial that was constructed in 1914 after the death of Abraham Lincoln in 1867. The construction of the memorial began late after his death because there were no sufficient funds to begin construction immediately after his death. The building of started when President Taft the seventeenth president signed a bill that was passed by congress to allow the construction. Despite of the building being built in honor of Abraham, the memorial attracts tourists. Different movements hold their meetings at the park; for example, Martin Luther used the memorial to deliver the speech known as, “I have a dream.”
I have chosen to use http://www.washingtondc-go.com/attractions/lincoln-memorial-history.html to help me carry out my research. I have chosen the source because it covers the history of the memorial from when it was built, the designer, and the events that have been held at the park. The source discusses about two members of the congress who struggled to ensure that the bill of building the park was passed by the president. The building of the park was completed in 1922, which was fifty seven years since Abraham died. Henry Bacon constructed the building, and he designed it like the temples that were built by Greek people of the nineteenth century. The outer part of the building has been built using long columns that symbolize the States of America. Apart from the columns, Bacon curved the names of all the States of America on the outer part of the building.
Daniel Chester planned the inner part of the monument while Piccirilli made the Lincoln sculpture; the statue takes a square shape because its width and length are sixteen feet. There are Roman appearances on the sculpture that symbolize the right of the people while there are writings above the head. The writings are a dedication to Abraham Lincoln for the great work that he did to the American people before his death.
The park has hosted several activities since it was built; for example, in 1963, people from Washington marched towards the park. The people demonstrated in the complaint of their civil rights, which include jobs and freedom. Over 200,000 people gathered at the park where thirteen leaders of the civil rights movements gave speeches. Martin Luther was among the leaders, and he gave a speech concerning his dream of the American people. The demonstration was held with the knowledge of President Kennedy who allowed civil right leaders to deliver their speeches at the monument.
I also chose to use http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/2000/vietnam092799.htm as another source for my work; this is because it covers sufficient details of protest against the Vietnam War that was held at the Lincoln memorial. Protestors of the war used the park to hold a rally; they discussed the actions to take to ensure that peace prevails in Vietnam while war ends. Researchers have found out that 100,000 people were gathered at the park to demonstrate against the war.
The Lincoln monument was built to honor Abraham Lincoln who died in 1867 although the park was completed fifty-seven years after his death. The park has been used for other activities; for example, civil rights movements have used the park to fight for freedom and rights of the people. Protestors of the Vietnam War held rallies at the park, which discussed the actions to take to ensure that peace prevails in Vietnam. The park is used to hold concerts from 1999 to 2001.
