Immigration is one of the debatable issues in the United States. It is worth noting that border security is a component that citizens and political class focus on achieving. Immigration and border security has dominated the current political debates in the United States presidential campaigns. Immigration policies should be formed and implemented to ensure that the borders are safe. Militarization and border enforcement should be the main policies that should be formed. This is because border issues have become very complicated (Phelps, 2014). The use of military is an extreme measure, but since immigrants expose the country to more dangerous, it is inevitable to use the strategy.
Homeland Security embraces the use of technology along the borders. This includes the use of sensors, drones, and double border patrols. An implementation may be very expensive, but it is worth because it makes the United States safer. Also, all immigrants should be documented to ensure that all the immigrants are monitored.
Enforcement officers are expected to be fair in enforcing immigration and border laws. Aspects of racial profiling and excessive use of force should be eliminated. Immigrants should not die due to enforcement of border laws (Shaw-Taylor, 2012). Also, the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) should involve border Communities in solving border security and the immigrant problems. Implementation process should include the communities. The policies implemented have to respect human rights and affirm the fundamental civil rights.
Terrorism is one of the major issues that can be raised on uncontrolled borders. Homeland security is expected to enhance border security and eliminate terrorism threat in the country. Immigration is believed to expose the country to terror attacks (Mikulski, 2014). Uncontrolled borders enable people to enter the United States borders without a thorough checkup. Some of the issues that can be focused include amnesty to illegal immigrants and E-verify. Resource allocation should be enhanced at the border security (Phelps, 2014). The use of E-verification is the best strategy to secure the sovereignty and safety of America. Also, the port-of-entry policies should be transparent, responsible and transparent to the demands of immigrants and those who cross the borders. Homeland Security should ensure that all criminal immigrants return to their home countries.
