Homeland Security Discussion 3
Global Threats
Global hazards are events that can affect not only one country but the entire human population. Currently, many experts believe that the biggest global threat the world is facing is climate change. Many believe that this is already beginning to transform life in the planet as seasons starts to shift and the temperatures are already climbing which cause the sea level to rise. This affects not only the human population but also other species on Earth. Climate change mitigation efforts have already started and one of which is to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and looking for new technologies involving the use of renewable energies (United Nations Environment Programme, n.d.).
Natural disasters are also considered as global threats and hazards as these events will have a negative effect on the human population. Natural hazards like earthquakes, volcanic eruption and tsunamis are becoming a global issue and threat. This year, drought is also considered as a global threat as a number of countries are already affected of El Nino (Nelson, 2014). Mitigation strategies in order to protect people from natural disasters are challenging as it may require manpower and funds from the government of the nation. Proper training and education for the community is also needed in order to relay important message on what to do during natural calamities like earthquakes and floods.
The last global threat the world is facing right now is the threat of terrorism. There have been an increase of the terrorist attacks in the different parts of the world and a number of groups have already emerged. Mitigation strategies against the hazards of terrorism would include the implementation of surveillance detection and increase the security in highly populated locations like airports and other terminals (Earl, 2005).
