The presentation by Sandy should be an eye-opener into the world of people trying to come to terms with the reality that they are attracted to people of the same sex. The fact that society does not wish to accept that it exists is a problem that many homosexuals are facing. Homosexuality should not be the problem, choosing not to deal with it, is the problem. Many religions, if not all, claim that it is a sin. It is even in the Holy Book that participating in sexual deed with individuals of similar sex is a sin. However, what people do not seem to realise is that it is not by choice for some of the people caught up in this way of life. It has been in existence since early days where people were shunned and chastised by society for being different. This paper will examine the issue, and find out why society reacts the way it does towards this subject.
Modernization tries to comprehend how homosexuals live. The stigma is still present. However, to some extent, homosexuals are being given the rights that individuals should have. Sandy’s case came as a surprise to me because she was attracted to people of the same age at a particularly tender age. It can be mystifying for a child to not like what other children like, or to just be different from the rest. Sandy explained this to her mother who accepted the situation. Unfortunately, it is likely that in that day and age, she did not fully understand the magnitude of the situation. After attempting suicide after being cheated on by a girlfriend, she was taken to hospital. This is a clear indication that everyone thought that she had a disease. In hospital, the discrimination followed her as doctors treated her different. In modern society, the treatment may have bordered on cruelty in some regions.
Homosexuals should not be regarded as being ill or having a sickness that can be cured. It may be probably accurate to claim that their mode of life is similar to everyone else’s; it is just that they are attracted to members of the same sex. Such a presentation may give one an inclination to look at homosexuals differently, and not judge them because of their way of life. It may open one’s eyes into some of the basic things that one may take for granted when it comes to civil rights and liberties. It was not until recently that laws were passed to allow for same sex marriages in some regions in the world. In some areas, traditions and culture may not allow this, and some even go further by ordering the death of the people involved.
In conclusion, it may be better to sit down and look at all the possible angles to the situations present. It may not be fair to homosexuals in the world if people chose to be average in their thinking. Society may be offended and repulsed by the mere thought of a homosexual. However, it is not society’s place to judge; rather, it should try and understand why one may be inclined toward such a life. Society may brand them sinners according to the Holy Book. However, the same Book talks of accepting sinners. It is high time society accepted people as unique individuals. People should not be judged based their sexual orientation.
