Speech pathology
Grades only account for a part of the whole when it comes to succeeding in any field. In speech-pathology the grades reflect that one has actually grasped what they were taught in class, but they definitely cannot guarantee ones success in this field.
I retook classes in post graduate school and furthermore did three years’ experience in the same field. One can therefore ask what did I gain from all that? Did the things I learned be only acquired if I had gotten a 4.0 GPA? Well I would answer with a big no. Firstly, the retaking of classes made me realize what I really wanted to do in the field of speech-pathology. At first I really did not know what to exactly do when I was in undergraduate school. Therefore despite passing with good grades, I was all mixed up and with no sense of direction. Unfortunately the good grades I had did not help me out at that time in my life.
Secondly, the retaking of the classes widened my understanding of the whole field of speech-pathology. Not only did I get a detailed understanding of the field, but it also helped me grasp the concepts of the field for long-term purposes. With the good grades I would have only remembered the concepts for a short time.
Thirdly, the fact that I gained experience in the field for three years moreover facilitated my gaining of more knowledge in the field. They say experience is the best teacher, and I truly agree with that. In those three years I learned how to practically apply what I had learned in class into real-life situation. I was able to come across different cases in the field of speech-language pathology. I met different people as a result whom we shared knowledge and exchanged ideas with. This also made me think outside the box in terms of dealing with certain issues related to the field in different ways. Furthermore meeting experts in that field gave me guidance on handling things.
Fourthly, I also gained experience in other fields not pertaining to speech-pathology. For example my communication skills improved and I am able to engage in conversations with different kinds of people in different situations.
Conclusively, from what is explained above good grades could not really offer me all this. Therefore I largely credit my success in the field of speech-language pathology to other things I went through apart from getting good grades.
