Leadership is an essential part of everyday life. It is an aspect that is highly vital regarding the daily undertakings and makings of a normal life. Leadership can be referred to as the process of good social influence. Leadership also relates to the factor of how individuals influence the mode of conduct or others. Leadership is often an attribute that is not exhibited by all persons. The entails of this vital factor are integrated into one’s personality by various processes. To be a good leader, one must have certain qualities and attributes. These virtues can either be learnt or in born.
Character constituent of any individual forms a very basic requirement of good leadership (Mayer 9). I understand that in all institutions and organizations, leadership is often tied to individual character. As such, the authority often composes of the best character diversity in the firm. It is of great vitality that a given leader should earn the necessary level of trust from others below them. With honesty, I believe that I can be able to earn trust from the people who know me directly. Integrity in all I do will see to it that I get the necessary moral backing and support from the concerned individuals. This implies that the people related to me in terms of leadership will have trust on me. This is a very factor for effective and efficient leadership.
Enthusiasm about one’s work is vital. I believe that to make a good leader, I will have to get interested and concerned with my immediate milieu (Pringle 54). This will help me in ensuring that I am able to give my all in my undertakings. Dedication sourced from the enthusiasm I have for my leadership role will ensure impeccability and incisiveness in my position. As such, better service delivery will be reflected in my general activity. This is one factor that will see to it that I get necessary trust from my subjects. Mahatma Gandhi, a famous philanthropist displays this leadership component well. It is the basis that which he became famous and related to even so many years after his death.
Confidence forms the other vital part of overall good leadership (Maxwell 17). Ever since I joined elementary school, I have been directed by teachers and even parents that I should exhibit confidence. I could tell from very simple class president selections that the chosen one had complete confidence in them. Confidence ensures that one is able to set the necessary direction. Consequently, this aspect vitally inspires confidence in others as a ripple effect. In general, a leader who conveys confidence in all their undertakings consequently inspires the best effort from respective team members. It is evident that Barrack Obama made it to the white house as the first black president by use of confidence. As such, I will keep on building on my self confidence as a way of ensuring that I am a good leader in given a position in future.
Decisiveness is an important aspect in the leadership aspect (Saraf 34). Interestingly though, some politicians need to pay close attention to this attribute. I believe that one should not waffle on some see-saw on decisions at any time. To portray to the concerned persons that I am decisive, I would need to do some homework on my undertakings. Gathering relevant information, gathering input from my charges, and most importantly ensuring that I have made reasonable decisions based on the first two tasks is vital. Portraying this picture will ensure that I am in line with the requirements and expectations of concerned people.
The importance of courage in one’s undertaking cannot be missed as a vital base of good leadership. Courage encompasses so many other attributes of a good leader. For instance, courage affects the decisiveness of a given leader. Sticking to one’s conviction or the adoption of respective gut instinct is what counts. As such, a good leader should not be intimidated in trying out probable successful and beneficial approaches in the long run.
The importance of patience as a good leadership basis cannot be underestimated (Saraf 89). Let’s consider a leader who is trying to explain crucial procedures or tasks to concerned individuals. It might be human to get upset or even impatient with the individuals. Clarification of the misunderstood concepts may be a hard or even impossible task in case the leader is impatient. My mother always insisted that when one does not understand your concerns or explanations, I should blame myself for that. Therefore, one should view this scenario as their own fault. As such, I know that I have to improve my levels of patience in all I do if I want to make a good leader.
Uncertain situations will always crop out in some instances. As a leader, one is given the obligation of ensuring the proper tackling and addressing of such situations (Maxwell 55). These are situations that may make a fake leader to fall. More importantly, the application of other virtues as stated previously in the paper comes into play for efficient problem solving. Orderliness and purposefulness are two vital inputs in such a situation. A positive demeanor coupled with the proper display of some of the discussed leadership characteristics will ensure a rational decision. As such, the concerned individuals will be reassured and overly secured with the confidence that the leadership is properly addressing given situations. Most world leaders have shown this in their undertakings. For instance, during the September 11 attacks on the pentagon, the then United States President George Bush effectively displayed this leadership trait. This input helped in a large way in ensuring that tranquility reigned in the country. The people had deep confidence that the concerned government would adequately deal with the situation.
Situational tolerance from leadership is an expected attribute. As such, respective leaders are required to respond well to ambiguity from concerned people (Pringle 44). In such situations, a good leader is expected to remain calm, composed, and steadfast in relation to the situation. It is a time that requires the play of various discussed elements of good leadership. This process will also ensure that the leadership position makes the right judgment and way forward.
Good leadership must exhibit the vital virtue of responsibility. It is vital to note that the role of a leader is to dispense various services and obligatory directions. As such, a good leader must have responsibility engrained in their personality. This aspect will ensure that good decisions are made from the top leadership. This virtue calls for the importance of not blaming individuals under one have done mistakes.
Team playing and membership is also a constructive leadership activity (Saraf 27). Good leaders are expected to build on team playing as a way of enhancing performance especially if in the environment concerned is a corporate. Further, the respective leadership is expected to disseminate vital attributes to the team members. The ripple effect of this is that there will be an organization that has full control over situations.
Planning for succession is also a vital leadership undertaking (Thayer 43). It is vital to note that one cannot remain in a given leadership position for the rest of forever. As such, the concerned leader should wisely disseminate vital personal attributes and virtues to the rest of his subjects. This will potentially enable the concerned individuals to become part of the leadership in future. This aspect is also vital considering the respective leader will not be power greedy. Most importantly, if the respective leadership has an interest in the given setting, they should ensure that continuity of proper power application, by the help of competent leaders, is always in play. This is one vital component that I must therefore integrate in my personality if I have to make a good future leader.
Conclusion
Leadership is an important entity in our daily lives. Of further importance is the requisite attributes of a good leader. The debate as to whom and what makes a leadership credible is flexible and subject to numerous varying positions. However, the stated components of a good leader in this context are overly agreeable to many. As a good leader, I will personally aim to having a full achievement of the stated virtues. With other attributes such as honesty, good morals, and many others not discussed above, I believe that I can be able to make a good future leader in all context and levels.
