How I See Homosexuality Essay Example

Despite the fact that most modern societies are moving towards tolerance and inclusiveness, there are still categories of people who experience discrimination in one or several spheres of their lives. Homosexuals is a social group which is discriminated most fiercely. It seems that homosexuality has become a label which, once put on a person, means that this person is inferior to others in all possible respects, as if a mere presence of sexual attraction to people of the same sex somehow influences a person's moral or professional value. Nature gives choices, it is society that limits them.
I regret to come across instances of discrimination on the basis of sexuality. Discrimination by such traits as sexuality, gender, race and many others greatly limits the potential of any society. A society can live well and be productive if its every member lives well and is productive. It can hardly be achieved if a person is shamed and bullied because of his or her natural features or choices. Generally, as for today, most societies have evolved to recognize tolerance as their basic value and basic approach to dealing with diversity of any kind, be it origin, religious beliefs, sexuality, or gender roles. Still, there are cases when people who in some way or another do not conform to the dominant positive image – that of young white educated heterosexual male – are treated unjustly. All people should be seen and accepted for their intrinsic value as individuals and professionals, not by the labels such as “a homosexual”. For example, sexual preference for people of the same sex does not prevent a person from being a great and valuable professional in his or her field. Knowledge and skill do not depend on sexuality, and it is exactly the knowledge and skill for which a person is hired to perform certain duties. This is the reason why I do not discriminate against homosexuals in the professional world and see no reason for doing so.
However, the professional world is not the only place where homosexual people might encounter discrimination. It often happens that they are shamed and rejected by their community, friends, or even relatives. Sometimes, homosexuals are even feared for some reason. Family law provides many examples how discrimination interferes with homosexuals' private lives. Some people might think that attraction for people of the same sex does not go beyond sexual intercourse and thus tolerate it as some means of making one's sexual life more colorful. What is often forgotten that, like heterosexual couples, homosexual couples can actually love each other and long for building a life together. While a man and a woman can make their relationship official and take up perks and responsibilities which such a status brings about, a man and a man or a woman and a woman in many countries are still refused the benefits of matrimony. Thus, in a homosexual couple a woman is doomed to remain in the status of a girlfriend without hoping to ever become an officially recognized life-long partner. Homosexual couples lose all the privileges with matrimony entails and thus are denied the chance of properly building their private lives. The pressure which come from this realization negatively influences professional and social performance of homosexual individuals. I consider it unacceptable to deny people a chance to be happy in their private lives based on some trait which at the current point in time is for some reason considered bad.
