Introduction
Language is made up of many symbols. The way we organize the symbols enable our communication. Language allows self reflection, organization of thoughts and enables hypothetical thinking as explained.
Self-reflection
This explains the aspects whereby people use the language to reflect about themselves. There are two aspects in the word self: ‘I’ and ‘me’ aspect. ‘I’ aspect only considers what goes around itself. Thoughts of other people are not part of it. The ‘me’ aspect keeps control of ‘I.’ It is concerned with what other people think and how they will be affected by a given action taken by ‘I.’ The two aspects therefore enable people to balance what they think about and do with what other people will think about and how they will be affected. They can put their image upright before others, Wood (2010).
Organizing perception
Perception is the way we reflect what we go through. To organize perception is entirely determined by what is taking place and the nature we have labeled ourselves around. On everything that is said or has occurred, our reactions are always different because of how we have perceived it. Perception activates the feeling we display about something or someone. For instance we may perceive a joke from an enemy to be an insult and vice versa (Campbell, 2004).
Allowing hypothetical thought
Hypothetical thought is reflected in the way we put visualization into ideas. The availability of symbols in the language makes it possible to device plans as well as organizing our goals. We can review what we have encountered in the past and connect it with the present in order to make future plans for our personal growth.
Connection between language and perception
Tangible and abstract ideas which are mere perceptions are best communicated by the symbols contained in the language we use. For instance, we may perceive that a woman is beautiful but without symbolically describing the nature of her beauty in language, there will be no meaning communicated. The reactions we develop on issues we have perceived are best shown by the language symbols (Bloomfield, 1914).
Conclusion
We are taught to organize, reflect and live better because of the language symbols and perceptions. We can develop hypothetical thinking and explain the course and nature of our life, hence able to live in three dimensions. Language is the pillar of perception and communication.
