IT, or Information Technologies, has been a growing field for some time, keeping pace with the every growing technologies that define the world we currently live in. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are currently 482,040 people employed in a capacity such as the ones listed in the preceding paragraph. The year the statistics were taken saw both an employment rise and wage rise. The mean hourly wage for such a career is $40.20 per hour with an mean annual wage of 83,800. In other words, it is a well-compensated career. (Bureau of Labor, 2013). Time management, in any career is important for success. This essay breaks down both the current state of the IT field and the best way to approach time management within it. One of the primary problems in IT is needing to name a myriad of tasks simultaneously, the solution to this problem is learning how to prioritize.
Reading job descriptions for employment opportunities in IT provide a realistic preview as to what this field requires. One element is clear, that is that there are many different jobs and role someone in an IT field must fill. Looking at Craigslist postings, it becomes clear that flexibility and adaption is a requirement as this line of work is constantly in need of learning new technologies and new implementations of existing technologies to keep pace with the emerging ones. Most postings also emphasize the need for working with a team. The team involves spending time both writing code and working with systems, educating oneself, and engaging in group discussions and activities.
Over the next five years technologies are going to be changing rapidly. Education does not ends with the classroom. Many of the current technologies used will be obsolete in three years. (Moore, 2013) It is important for anyone in IT to continue to work on both expanding my technical knowledge and my theoretical understandings of how various systems work and how different systems can be integrated. Everyday, at least an hour should be spent engaging with new and changing technologies.
Time management is one of the proven metrics of success. The IT field has aspects to it that are very different but necessary in order for well-rounded success in the job field. By identifying the key components of the job, prioritizing them and then allotting them there do, there is a greater likelihood of having success within an IT career.
