Human psychology is diverse when it comes to the process of information capturing the attention of a human mind. This is mainly because it is evident that some things are able to capture our attention while others do not capture it. This phenomenon is referred to as unintentional blindness. There are number of factors that shape what captures a person’s attention. It is pertinent to note that all the factors that will be discussed are based on the visual attractiveness of the factor to the human brain.
The main factor that affects attention is conspicuity of the information being presented to an individual. This can be defined as the degree with which information is able to jump out and grab ones attention. There are two types. The first is the sensory conspicuity, which deals with the physical aspect of the information. For example, it is easy to notice brightly colored pictures since it has high sensory conspicuous features that are easily noticeable by the human brain. In most cases, the brain may even process the information subconsciously. This implies that in some cases the brain is unaware when it processes some of the information. Therefore, this highly relies in the way that the way the design of the information is done. When properly done a good information design is an excellent attention grabber and integrates the appropriate visual language for the message contained in it. It is pertinent to note that the design is able to deliver the message contained in through the words as well as the imagery used.
The second form of conspicuity is cognitive conspicuity. This factor deals with the perceived importance of the information being presented to the listener. For example, if the listener considers something to be important he or she will pay attention. On the other hand, if he or she is not interested in the information provided then he will pay little or no attention to the information being presented. The level of importance of the information emanates from the outlook that the individual has on the information being presented to him or her.
In my case, I am able to remember things that are invaluable, irrelevant or just to my liking but I keep forgetting important things. For example, I am a big movie fan and will always make a point to attend movie premiers. I always remember the dates to each movie premier. On the other hand, I always remember lyrics from songs I like as well as movie lines and scenes that I enjoyed. However, sometimes when it comes to remembering where I put my keys or remembering an activity that I was supposed to do, I draw a blank. Sometimes I tend to forget activities that I think are boring like doing chores around the house. For example, I set some dates to do chores around the house and when I wake up in the morning and my brain tells me that I had a plan to do something but I do not remember what it was. On the other hand, I never forget when CSI is on television.
When it comes to important tasks, I always make a mental note to forget but I always end up forgetting to carry out what I had set for myself. I believe that I am less attentive when it comes to remembering activities that do not interest me. In some cases, I forget important because of distractions that are around me. For example, my mother may be telling me something important while I am sending a text message to a friend. I will always tell my mother that I have understood her message but after a while, I cannot remember what she was saying. It is important to note that I can be able to multitask. However, when it comes to carrying out complicated tasks that require 100% of my brain’s attention then I am unable to multi task. In addition, in such a case my attention is wholly on sending my friend a text message, therefore, I rarely receive the message my mother is trying to put across. This has led to me starting to use a daily planner on my cell phone. I have an application that helps to store important task that I might forget. The application has a reminder that sets off an alarm when the task is to be completed. This has helped reduce the number of times I forget to do important tasks.
