UAW over the years has been involved in assisting workers in the communities fight for their rights. In the 1940’s to 1970, the organization played a significant role under the presidency of Walter Reuther in civil rights and anti-communist moves. The important part of the union was gaining high wages and pensions for auto workers.
The union is actively involved in community programs such as youth outreach programs and mentorship of the youth. The Association sponsors programs that are meant to directly benefit the young people and community as a whole. The union through its president created a charitable organization called UAW-Chrysler National Training Center. The group sponsored an after school program for child at-risk for the Woodbridge community youth center in Detroit. The center offers an after-school program that targets seven schools within Detroit. The child comes together and participates in different sporting activities irrespective of the school they are from which is a good way to bring them together.
In a partnership between UAW and Ford, a total of $100k was donated for Detroit youth, with an aim to support the Jackie Robinson sports complex. The objective of the initiative is to increase youth literacy and create a positive culture for the youth. The youth will have a place to spend their free time to develop talent and not engage in activities that may lead to criminal activities.
The majority of the programs are for youth empowerment, with the aim of giving back to the community. The UAW management as an organization they have a role in making the communities they operate in better by providing resources and money to meet the needs of the community.
