Most companies creates product that offer almost everything a consumer wants. They incorporate many features into a single item thinking this will attract more buyers resulting to an increase of sales. However, this scenario is not always the result. Some studies reveal that some customers end up unsatisfied after buying the package.
Why do customers become unsatisfied?
It is true that consumers are attracted to an item that has a five-in-one feature. If agents present two cellphones with a similar price, client will instantly choose the one which has camera, mp3 player, touch-screen, Wi-Fi connection, and dual-sim phone over the other that lacks one or two features. But in the end, some of them will realize that the more complex the product is, the more inconvenient it became. This is called feature fatigue. An additional function means additional usage learning. What’s bad with this fatigue is that buyers might opt to return the product or discourage their colleagues from buying it.
How can companies minimize feature fatigue?
In order to prevent negative feedbacks, product makers must find a solution for feature fatigue. An initial step is removing excess functions that slowdown the speed of the product. Unnecessary items might prevent the normal capability of an item. Second, build simple things. Simple things are user-friendly. They are easy to understood and operate. Next is concentrate on the main function of the product. For an instance, a car’s main function is to carry its passengers to their destination. Car manufacturer must put emphasis on making cars with faster engine and comfortable seat. Last understands what the public need from a product. Consumer buys a phone to aid their communication needs. Despite the attraction on extra features, in reality, buyers are looking for phones with clearer earpiece and easy to operate.
What are the products that are over featured? Cellphone is one of the overly featured items nowadays. A basic phone today has camera, mp3 player, converter, dual-sim and touchscreen. I think the manufacturer can take off the converter function because people are not really using it. In addition, the dual-sim feature should be avoided because it slowdown the processing of calls or text messaging. User must switch from one network to another and that takes at least ten seconds.
Another thing is the refrigerator with a television. Yes, one can say that it can save space putting two appliances in a single corner of the house. The question is where would we put the item? Does it fit in the kitchen or in the living room?
I think manufacturers made the extras for both item that I consider for the objective of presenting a product that cost less than the price of buying separate items.
