The case elaborates on the question how important are the individuals to the company success in broad, and how important was Steve Jobs as CEO to Apple success. In January 2009, Jobs announced his temporary medical leave due to “hormone imbalance" and promised that in the case of serious illness he will be the first to resign from his position. During his absence, his major responsibilities were carried by Tim Cook – company’s chief operating officer. The investors got worried which is not unusual. Peter Capelli commented that people often attribute the success of an organization of the individuals, which is mostly never the case. He also noted that succession planning, which is used in large organizations for filling top jobs is also almost always useless. Jim Moore from Sun Microsystems suggests that succession development is a much better approach to the task than succession planning is. He states that plans do not provide a real development experience for people. Another decision – succession management – is explained by Robert Fulmer. He suggests that the organizations should create possibilities for talent development within the company to cover a company’s future needs in top position professionals. Another issue is to what extent should the implementation of the succession plan and its progress be revealed to the public. And again Apple’s hesitation in revealing details about Steve Jobs’s health as well as a reluctance in making concrete actions made investors worry. Kim Caughey Forrest comments that the board of directors failed to develop and implement succession planning which they should have done after Jobs’s previous leave in 2009.
