Man is classified as an animal together with thousands of other species in the animal kingdom. However, he has a superior position in the animal kingdom due to his high reasoning and logical powers including the capability to manipulate and even make meals out of other animals. Indeed, man and human beings depend on each other for among others food as both are part of the food chain of each other. However, man is the biggest beneficiary given that he obtains many products such as meat, fur, milk, skins, and other products from animals. This shows that man has a huge responsibility to feed and take care of the animals including intervening in the reproduction and survival of some animals to ensure their safety and continuation.
Human beings and animals are inseparable. Due to the advancements in education and research, the protection of animals has become a popular issue in entirely all parts of the world. Although relationships between man and animals can hardly reach an ideal state, it is important that all people do what is in their means to take care of the animals that form part of their ecosystem. It is important to note that some animals such as pythons, buffaloes, blue whales and members of the cat family are ferocious and they only need to be protected formally. The artworks show different relationships between human beings and animals.
The first painting depicts a man and a cheetah which is walking the streets at night. In this case, I wanted to make it clear that the cheetah has left its natural habitat- the jungle- and it has "invaded" human habitation- the city- where it has been welcomed. The human figure is seemingly hugging the cheetah and this shows a friendly relationship between them. Seemingly, the animal is not disturbed or enraged. However, there is a noticeable gap between the animal and the human figure to depict an ordinary human being who still maintains some restraint and caution when relating to animals. The painting makes use of special broken glass on the road to make it look special and evoke some deep artistic feelings on the viewers. I have placed some sequins on the human figure to make it seem that he is fading away. The painting also bears some cutouts of some buildings and the moon stuck in the background as this makes the entire painting look stereoscopic and have more artistic appeal. I figured out that since I had already made the cheetah and the human figure as the dominance in the painting I would just adds some few more catchy details to eliminate ambiguity on the meaning of the painting.
The second painting shows an aquarium which is too small for a blue whale. Outside the aquarium, there are shadows of children who have come to view the animal. I wanted to show two things in this part. The first one is to condemn the fact that we have chosen to always place a barrier (in many cases) glass between us and animals. At times we need to do so for our own security. The second issue is that we are condemning the fact that many times we confine animals in very small places that are not representative of the anima's actual habitats. I used the recycled plastic bottle to represent the aquarium and used blue pigments to paint water on the bottle. The figures of the kids are made of black clay and I mixed the different colors of clay to create the whale in the bottle. I used other colors of clay to make the corals and other decorations as well.
The third work comprises of shadows made using hands in varying formations to represent various ferocious animals: an eagle, a crocodile, a bison, a cheetah, a snake, and a wolf. It shows that animals and human are inseparable, like a hand and its shadow. I made the shadows of the ferocious animals, took their photos and handed them to my art teacher. After that, I used a white pen to outline the eyes of the animals on the photograph.
