Human Resource Management: Performance appraisals
Performance review is considered as an important aspect in human resource with regards to helping in improved productivity. However, performance review develops the performance considered to be short term, enhances long term organization, instils fear, annihilates teamwork and brings about politics and rivalry. The statement is based on the negative effect of performance review which seems to be stronger than the positives. Companies look for long term goals which will sustain development for several years as growth is experienced. Performance management act as a hindrance to these long term goals since they look to achieve short term goals based on pressure. As a result, workers get scared of the working environment since they will be working under pressure. Every worker will be looking to outperform another since its individual performance that matters (Nankervis, Baird, Coffey, & Shields, 2013, p.341).
Team work is based on a free working environment and is a good trigger for long term company goals. The urge to outperform other employees is high with the presence of performance reviews and resultantly create a rivalry mood. The result is lack of team work which is important in defining the long term goals for a business and developing new strategies. Performance review is mainly based on behavior, competencies, and results of set goals. Different people have different capabilities which mean that, the performance of some people will constantly remain at a low. Constant reviews will only create a guilt upon them which will lead them to underperformance. The human resource department requires different evaluation standards that do not affect the performance of the employees and their relations. It is understandable that the management require good performance which is achieved through motivating employees. However, performance reviews can be in a way that they focus on long term goals and interpersonal relations between employees (Ahner, 2007, p.114).
