Psychology
Sexuality plays a major role in everyone’s life, and it is a part of being human, regardless of the gender, age, race, or religion. Everyone has their way of expressing their sexuality, either with thoughts and fantasy, or with their sexual partners. Sexuality could be controlled or ruled by the person’s desires, and whatever they fantasize is what fits their hidden personality. Also, religion and education could control their thoughts into disliking some acts of the sexual activities, like anal or oral sex, some religions or parents try to put them in the X zone; which makes the person grow up with the attitude of forbidding those sexual acts or seeing them as unacceptable in religious and psychological perspectives.
Education is something important to everyone in their lifetime, sexual education is important today because it teaches an important topic of sexuality. Due to all the sexual illnesses that are invading the world, even in the Middle East, considered as a province environment. Alfred Kinsey started the sexual education when he founded the Institute for Sex Research, in 1947 at Indiana University. Even though sex wasn’t a common subject at that time, he was brave enough to research and get the education that people needed for a better and healthy sexual life (Crooks and Bauer, 2013).
Also, if I was Alfred Kinsey in this time period, I would need to explore the body image issues. The body image issue is when a woman looks in the mirror and all she sees are flaws. Most women feel insecure about their bodies and they always feel the need to run to the plastic surgeon and get the look that they think will satisfy men or the society in general. The problem is that the media creates these ideas into the society, and put the light on women to make everyone feel that women needs to have a certain body shape and looks to attract men. So, people always think that the woman has to look skinny with a certain body shape otherwise she will not be attractive to the other gender, or even to women themselves (Crooks and Bauer, 2013).
Body image issue has a big effect around the world, and in my home country, Saudi Arabia. In my experience in this matter, I have faced a difficult time in my whole life, because I have Vitiligo, which is a condition where the person loses their pigment from areas of the skin causing white patches. So, back home, people get carried away after the media show girls as models and that is how all women should look. There was no way I could be accepted in the society, or even to get married. Even though my family worked hard to find a cure, they always wanted me to hide it and not tell anyone about it. Women walk through life in a difficult path, where they try to please others, and not show how God had created them. The blame goes to the media because they are educating people falsely about sexuality. Also, this leads me to the need to explore the meaning of sex, where it is a loving act that the people who are engaging in a sexual act are having a pure feeling to each other, which break the body image issue once the partners are accepting and loving no matter how they look like.
According to my instructor, Dr. Karen Eso; everyone has a person who loves them and care for them no matter how they look like, and it doesn’t matter if they are skinny, fat, short, tall, or even have two colors, there is someone for everyone (Eso). Exploring the body image issues would give knowledge for women to think about themselves clearly, and this might change the picture or the idea that they have in their own minds. Moreover, this research will give the world a number of things that they would think about, and try to fix and cut this number of damaged women and raise the self-esteem in those women who need to be reminded of how precious they are, and that their body doesn’t define them.
However, the statistics of the research would be more reliable if I used the survey method, because it is more anonymous and people will have the trust into express their true feelings easily. And I would do that in the United States; because it’s all started here, and because of the power that the United States has to make almost most of the people agree with what they show and offer. The United State also is open about sex and it is a free country, which makes it an example for a lot of countries that admires this freedom. On the other hand, there are topics that shouldn’t be studied because of its sensitivities to people. Like curing Homosexual or Bisexual people; because they don’t feel that they are sick and they are defiantly not looking for a cure (Crooks and Bauer, 2013).
According to American Psychological Association, Gay and Lesbians have the most difficult time to engage with the society, although they feel they have the right to live their lives normally without having fingers pointing at them everywhere they look. Human sexuality studies are a great way to live a healthy life, and fair life to everyone, no matter what religion they are, or what kind of lifestyle they are living (APA.org).
The sexuality of people has been a difficult issue in our societies all around the world. The media is the main cause of this problem, and people are absorbing the content and teachings that the media presents. Women are the victims of sexuality because they are used as sexual objects to attract men. Women and other feminist groups need to stand up and make their voices heard. Women have to fight against the teaching of the media and know that they are beautiful regardless of their body shape. The beauty of women is not only determined by their bodies, but from how they behave, love and enjoy life. Sexuality should not be the reason why women should feel insecure about their bodies.
