As a student at Humber College, I usually use the computers at the lab quite often. I do this to check my mail and research on class work. The labs have Pentium three computer, the operating systems that run on these computers are archaic. The network used to access the internet is also in bad shape causing the speeds to be extremely slow. This is a worrying trend in a day and age where the use of CRT screens is widely known to cause eye problems; internet speed are much faster and commands are completed on the click of a button and the Pentium three computers are completely phased out. I am writing this report to give the Director of Information Technology Services at the college a number of suggestions and recommendations in order to solve these problems.
The first and critical problem I would want tackled is the archaic hardware in the labs. These computers are of the grade Pentium three; they use such screens as CRT screens and are basically an ugly scene in modern day sophisticated computer environments. I would like to suggest to the Director of the ICT department at Humber College to make it a priority to by new computers. They do not have to be fresh from the shop, they could also be second hand but less archaic compared to the ones currently being used. This will reduce the effects we all know such computer have. For one, the CRT screen does not produce light that is good to the eyes. This means more and more people will continue to have eye problems as we continue using these screens. Another thing is that the image of his department will grow. These computers give the ICT department the image of a department made up of ignorant people who generally don’t want to change with the times.
The other thing I would want to point out is the introduction of better operating systems. The computers are still using very old operating systems. This results in us the users having to conform to this old technology, limiting us on the kinds of applications we can run on them. This can be frustrating for us because most of the programs we would want to use can only run on faster operating systems. I would suggest that the school introduce the Linux operating system that free from the vendor. This will solve the problem of acquiring new operating systems since they are usually very expensive. It will also solve the problem of having to install an antivirus. These old machines run outdated antivirus programs. This in turn means that the computers are highly infected with computer viruses that we take to our home computer. This causes us to mistrust this system. Even if you did your research on this computer, we use our emails to send ourselves an email with the information researched. This is in order to avoid having to fix our flash disks onto these computers.
I would also point out the issue on network problems. The internet is partly slow because of the network used to connect to the internet. A simple introduction of much recent categories of cabling and changing the Internet service provider will solve the problem. I recommend they take up an ISP that provides faster internet services after installing new, better network systems.
