Movie Review
In the film “Image is Powerful: a Cameron Russell TED Talk”, the model Cameron Russell explains how beauty is not always synonymous with happiness. A model at a young age, Russell proclaims that she was the result of a “genetic lottery”, in other words her appearance gave her advantages in life such as her career. However she also relates the downside of being objectified because of her looks.
In one instance she described a highly sexualized photo shoot that occurred when she was only 16 making her very uncomfortable about how she was valued only for her appearance.
In the short film “Dove Real Beauty Sketches” also sets out to explain that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In a social experiment, Dove hired an sketch artist to draw women first as how they described their appearance and secondly by how another person described their appearance. The results showed that the women were much less likely to describe themselves as attractive than their peers where in speaking about them. This experiment shows that often people has a distorted view of their own appearance and that women often have self-confidence issues as a result.
These two videos relate to one another because both examine how women feel about their personal appearance. The importance that society puts on this one facet of one’s outer self is disproportionate to how it feels about one’s inner self. These women in both videos are trying to express that appearance and what is considered beautiful is often different to different people.
