Importance of a Constitution to a National Union
A constitution is a set of well laid down laws and procedures that give the guidelines of how to govern an organization. It defines the various powers and authorities of different people and their position and gives the rights and freedoms of the employees, which should be respected in the course of their work. In this essay, we are going to look at the importance of the constitution of a national union and how it dictates the internal governing procedures of the union.
A national union is a group of workers who have a common goal to achieve and they are mostly in the same field of work (Sloane & Witney, 2010). There are various trade unions in the world, which are formed by business people since they both have the same interest. These unions have a national constitution and it is important in the following ways. First, it brings unity amongst the members since they have the set procedures governing their conduct. They have respect for each other and have a sense of belonging since they are equal in the face of the set laws. Secondly, the constitution gives guidelines on the workers’ demands and how to fulfill them. These demands include the right to organize themselves and their work, the right to better pay and good living standards, the right to be secure against such incidents like accidents in the course of their duties and to be treated equally without any discrimination based on gender or race (Sloane & Witney, 2010). This ensures that the members of the union are equal.
This constitution dictates the internal government procedure in that there is a clear statement of all the roles and powers of the management (Sloane & Witney,2010). There is a standard way of how to run the union and nobody can run it the way he or she feels like. It also dictates the procedures followed in electing representatives to the union and hence the workers decide who is best suited to lead them.
In conclusion, a constitution is the basic law governing any group of people. All unions should have a well- structured constitution to ensure the union is run in a good manner and the rights and freedoms of workers are respected. This will ensure unity in the union and more people will have the interest to join it.
