Classic English Literature
They carried different dances owing to different genres. For hip-hop music, there were a couple of styles i.e. locking, popping and breaking. These styles date back to 1970 and they were popularized by American dance crews in the U.S.
They jumped on their own counts and clapped. Since the moves were based on the lyrics, that they sang. For example, when they said, “When I saw her, my heart beat increased,” they did heart pulses. When they said, “put your hands up,” they put their hands up and did a waving gesture as if they were waving to a multitude. The connection of their words and their steps had a very distinct connection.
Their moves also were sometimes slow and sometimes energetic. When they spoke slowly, their moves were also slow. However, when their tempo rose, their moves also increased in speed. Sometimes they were forced to breathe out distinct times e.g. thrice or twice and then chance to another style of dance.
In between the dances were breaks of about 10 minutes on which the instructor took time to explain to the choreographers about the pros and cons. He usually spoke in motivating tone so as to give spirit to them. The instructor was overheard saying that it was encouraged if they practiced dancing when they were alone especially at home. He advised them that they should start playing a song, freestyle it and then see for themselves what could initiate a move in their body. This way, they could be able to come up with new fantastic moves by intuition. It also enabled them to develop better moves from the existent ones. “Just switch on the song, listen to the lyrics and imagine the best moves that can come out of that song. Practice them and try to perfect them. You will marvel at your own invention!” He told them.
They practiced much of breaking, locking and popping. Though the moves were unique, they showed some borrowing from other styles witnessed formerly. They had their origin from Lindy’s hop, moves shared from many other dance styles. This showed that dancers to other genres could easily acquaint themselves to the moves. There was some borrowing from moves like limbo dance, willy bounce and helicopter. However, they were modified that they looked totally different. The moves are simpler to learn and they lack complexity that could actually discourage amateur dancers from say salsa. According to the moves, every beat was supposed to be danced to i.e. there is no beat that was not supposed to be assumed. Though they spoke out the words in the songs, they portrayed this coordination through their moves.
The choreographers spelt out the same words, same patterns, same, moves with the same speed. They portrayed high profile professionalism which can be attributed to consistent practice and discipline.
For example, I witnessed this pattern with every choreographer with none of them missing a single step. They stood upright with their feet together and their toes pointing forward. Then they kicked the right foot in front then returned it back quickly. They could then put their weight on their right foot, pick their left foot and shifted their weight to the left foot. This is just to mention.
