2.
Specify the basic clinical concern that underlies the decision to conduct this study.
(2 points)
The author decided to undergo this research in order to find out how much effort is needed by older individuals to keep up with their daily activities during the period between transition from a clinical disease state to the actual development of the state of disability, which is defined as the inability of the individual to effectively perform their daily activities.
3.
Specify whether the study is a quantitative or a qualitative study. (1 point)
The study was a qualitative one in which data was collected in the course of a large longitudinal study; in which interviews were conducted and observations were made.
4.
Specify whether the study would be classified as qualitative, descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, or experimental. Explain how you came to this decision. (2 points)
The study is a descriptive study. I came to this conclusion because I realized that the study set out to define the characteristics of a particular set of people that may be going through the process of preclinical disability.
5.
Specify the variables that were addressed in the literature review and explain why these variables are relevant to the study. (2 points)
The variables that were addressed in the literature review includes: stress and coping mechanisms.
In line with the aim of the study, which is to find out the level at which these individuals are undergoing preclinical disability; it is imperative to determine the stress that these individuals are going through and also to determine which coping mechanisms they are utilizing in the situation.
6.
What sampling strategy was used? Why was this strategy appropriate? (2 points)
A form of convenience sampling method was used in which the subjects were recruited through the serial recruitment method. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were set.
Serial recruitment is not an ideal form of sampling. However, for this kind of study, the researcher already had a target population in mind. Therefore I would still say that the sampling method was appropriate for the study.
7.
What data collection methodologies/instruments were used? Name one strength and one limitation of each data collection strategy? (3 points)
Instruments include a structured questionnaire and also structured interview.
A structured questionnaire has the advantage of streamlining the response of respondents in the study, which makes analysis of the data easier. However, this tends to restrict the responses that the researcher would get at the end of the day.
A structured interview has the advantage of being orderly with the interview going exactly the same way for all respondents. However, it does not allow for the natural flow of information in a way that would have been convenient for the interviewee.
8.
Specify each of the data analysis techniques that was used. Specify whether each analytical strategy is descriptive or inferential. (3 points)
According to the author, hermeneutic analysis, which is a form of interpretive analysis was used in analyzing the data. This is a form of descriptive analytical strategy.
9.
What does this study contribute to the improvement of nursing care and explain how you came to this decision? (4 points)
The study has contributed to the better understanding of the phenomenon of preclinical disability. The researcher was able to identify certain coping strategies that individuals who have preclinical disability use in overcoming the problem. The researcher was able to classify these strategies into themes, including compensation, maintenance, stress management, alteration of meaning and involvement with others
