In management influencing and politics are important in ensuring that goals are achieved to the required standards by team. The article talks about using three elements of management namely Reciprocity, Networking and negotiation for an organization manager to achieve their goals and ensure that the organization meets its intended goals. Reciprocity in management can be defined as whereby one creates an obligation to others to get work done. In this case a manager may give the employees some favors and as payback the employees will be obligated to repay by abiding to the request and managerial requirements of the manager. This is an important skill that most managers should adapt to ensure that they have their juniors obligated to repay them by working under their conditions. The element of management ensures that a relationship is created between different levels of management and thereby trust is developed at the different levels. In this article, Kate used the reciprocity by meeting each members of the board individually and explained to them the reason of changing the IT platform they were using and upgrade it. By her showing trust to each of the individuals she approached individually they had the moral obligation to support her project thus it going through. This is a good example of how reciprocity worked in management in favor of an executive member.
n management, there is also need to create political influence. One of the major was to create major political influence in management is by networking. Networking is the ability the ability to develop relationships among different people thus having the power to influence. One of the most re- known ways of networking is socially but the relationship is transferred to business or the professionalism. The article indicates that Kate had socialized with members of the board and had created a social relationship which had made it possible for her to visit them at an individual level other than the official board meetings. In all the elements of management networking has proved to be the most successful. This is because one gets to understand each person at a personal level and can handle them differently other than the use of collective management.
Negotiating is also an important factor in networking. Most people overlook the element of negotiation as a professional tool. It is important to understand most of the events that take place in an organization take the element of negotiation. Some of the day to day negotiations that may take place include requesting for off days and the resources at the workplace. Negotiations involve discussing ideas with the aim of both parties trying to get into a mutual agreement. In the process both parties should not try to overlook the interests of each other and must come into an agreement that benefits both of them. At the organization where she worked, Kate had to negotiate the on the benefits of implementing the new system. The deal agreed upon saw for it that Kate had better working conditions and in return the company would retain its position as Fortune 100 Company.
In conclusion, we have pointed out that there are several elements required in management. The elements mentioned are Reciprocity, Networking and negotiation. However, in order to fully achieve them, one must have some political power. This is the ability convince people by influence and power. In the article, these elements have been witnessed as in the case of Kate who used her political power to influence the board to adapt to new systems she had proposed.
