There are many events and problems faced by Americans in late seventy’s and early eighteen’s. Few of those issues led the Americans to the revolution in late eighteenth century. Many authors presented the revolutionary story of Americans. One of those authors is Jeff Wallenfeldt, who wrote this book to highlight the issues of that era when Americans faced various problems to due to the British. The main issues discussed in this book are related to unjust taxation in which Congress noticed taxation without representation. Then British related the other one to the intervention in colonial affairs. It was the British rule that was disturbing the Americans independence in the US and it was British people who had the upper hand over the Americans. Therefore, the taxation and intervention issues created tension between both Americans and British people and to solve such issues the young Republic worked to make its way in the world.
Wallenfeldt in this book highlighted the problems that were faced by many in the US. The constitutional differences with Britain became the cause of the taxation issue. The taxation controversy started due to the objections of the taxation on the American colonies and taxation without representation. In order to solve these arising problems, Americans did many protests against British. Later on, these protests became a reason for the war in late eighteenth with world’s dominant military power. This book review will present the American revolutionary story and the efforts of individuals who successfully organized the young republic.
The tax related issues became serious, and it led the Americans to war. Although, the seventy’s war was effectively a draw, but it successfully secured the US position in the world. Then the change of British policy on taxation saved the Americans from getting trapped in further issues. Moreover, the sympathies of Congress and some domestic reasons saved the colonial protests. However, the issues couldn’t be resolved properly as the Britain’s financial burden was not lifted. Therefore, the taxation objection of American colonies remained the same and in this case, British claimed that American colonies were not represented in parliament, but they must pay tax as they are the part of the parliament.
It was the time when Americans were also treated unequal, and they lost control over their affairs. For example, the taxation issue was impacting the import and export business in America. Some of the basic things were being imported and exported, but the taxation issue was destroying the business, and it was not acceptable for American colonies. It was the reason that the association with continental congress and radical actions and loyalism was not considered as a solution to all these taxation problems.
Thus, arguments for independence and declaration of independence were expected by American colonies. It was the peak time when American colonies started to make the revolutionary decisions. Then, the foundation of the American republic came into being. The source of the strength were those troubles that people in America was facing. To prove their position they used the proper documentation process to shape their country in a different style (Wallenfeldt 12).
The use of documents to prove their rights and previous supportive laws and legislations helped the American Britain’s to present the strong arguments against British rule. It was the British Rule that was not acceptable or understandable by American colonies. Moreover, jealousy factor was also there that was affecting the relations between British and Americans. The reason for jealousy was that the British were not agreeing to change their rules. They preferred more the taxation rule over the relations with American colonies (Wallenfeldt 19).
The continental congress performed their role to stop all these issues between the years 1774-1788. During this period, Americans were oppressed with British rules, and the crime ratio was increasing. Colonists were trying to import or export things illegally to save their business from unjust taxation. The external duties on a wide range of necessities were not acceptable for colonists as they were only transferring the glass, paint, paper and tea that is the principle and domestic beverage.
The Tea Act by Britain caused serious troubles for the American colonists as tea export was the easiest way to make their business run and earn money. Furthermore, other acts in different areas were also impacting the colonist businesses. All these things that they wanted to export were not even expensive stuff on which people would have paid high taxes. Many of American colonists did slavery to Britain just to get rid of these unjust taxes and save their money that was given to Britain. To survive they opted slavery and from late seventies to early eighties they were slaves.
However, it was not acceptable to many of the colonist, and they took steps to make a revolution. Therefore, Americans revolution and war of 1812 was the cumulative result of such unjust taxation and unequal treatment and legislation by British. Even the parliament supported the American colonies, but they could not change the unjust behavior by Britain. However, they amended the bill of rights to support the Americans, but it was not effective until the colonist revolution ended with a war. Then the declaration of independence by colonists after war and support from Congress saved them from unjust taxation and rules of Britain.
While concluding it can be said that the Parliament can impose no taxes, and thus the protests against the taxation rule was a right step taken by the American colonies. The revolutionary decisions helped the entire American colonies to make their position stronger. As British were exempted from taxes that were imposed on American colonies, so the objection and protest against them were right enough to make the revolutionary party strong. Thus, the American republic came into being, and the individuals of this republic were passionate to save their country and make it free from unjust taxation. Although this revolution and the American Republic led both countries to war in early eighty’s, the results were positive. As the American colonist were saved from all unjust taxations and rules.
