Human behavior is very complex and interesting, and psychology is the study of the human mind and behavior. It can only be understood by someone who has the proper knowledge about the human mind and behavior. In this essay, I discuss as to why I should major in psychology and explore its scope as a career, instead of majoring in Fashion.
Even though my major is fashion, I am thinking of changing my major and taking up psychology as it has a wide scope and there are so many fields that you can specialize in like, educational psychology, child psychology, clinical, organizational psychology and so on (Cherry 2015). Another reason is that my father went into depression, and I feel that becoming a psychologist would help me to understand him and help him better. Personally, I feel that psychology is one of the most dynamic fields as it studies the crucial elements of the human behavior and analyses the aspects of the human mind and behavior. Choosing psychology as a career path will help you to give back to the society and make a difference in the lives’ of other people. The U.S. Department of Labor states that there will be a growth of approximately 22% in the field of psychology by the year 2020. This shows that there is much scope in pursuing psychology as a career (Cherry 2014).
Psychology is as vast and deep as an ocean and carries many components. It depends on you what you will choose to pursue your career in. A degree in psychology will open the gates to many other career options like forensic psychology, clinical, counseling, and much more (Cherry 2014). You will learn so much about yourself and those around you. An undergraduate degree in psychology will help you for your further graduate study. After majoring in psychology, you can decide which field you are the most passionate about. Job opportunities are also very good. It is expected that in the next three years there will be an increase in demand for trained professionals in clinical, industrial and school psychology.
Psychology as a career has grown tremendously in the recent years. As our lifestyle is becoming more and more stressful each day, it is vital that more trained psychologists are produced for the betterment of the society. According to the statistics, the earnings of clinical, school and industrial psychologists varied from $30,000 to $88,000 (Careers in Psychology, Psychologist Jobs, and Career Information 2016). These statistics have changed over the years, and the average earnings have increased manifolds. Being a psychologist is fun and challenging at the same time. In the end, it depends on what your plans for the future are and what interests you the most. Psychology is an absorbing subject. You must consider to major in psychology.
