When life gets tough, find that special happy place where you can relieve the stress and depressing feelings. Zadie Smith calls it “Find your Beach.” The beach does not necessarily have to be real. It can be a particular area or even just inside your mind (Smith, par. 4). Owing to the challenges and strenuous activities that affect urban folk in towns such as New York, there is the need to develop a calm and isolated dream or place that one can go to let go or forget his or her worries for a brief moment. “Find your Beach” entails doing what makes you happy such as listening to music, thinking about that special someone, or going to an actual beach. The pursuit of pleasure and happiness is not an easy thing but it is necessary for everyday living to prevent the problems associated with stress.

I attached this picture of how I imagined life in New York: many people and vehicles, plenty of noise and rushing, a lot of smoke, etc. Individuals are constantly chasing after a better life and money. The life in New York cannot be compared with the one in Manhattan from the image below.

The beautiful beach and sunset in Manhattan is a sight to behold. The isolation also has the ability to come the nerves. It is no wonder that Zadie Smith mentioned Manhattan as a suitable place to “Find your Beach.” The two pictures present contrasting elements concerning New York and Manhattan. New York life is all about the constant rush and lack of empathy while Manhattan is welcoming. If only one could stare at the sunset on the beach forever. Unfortunately, life is not all pomp and glitter or fun and games. The reality is that New York teaches you to cope with life hardships and develop a sense of maturity. But there is nothing wrong with escaping to Manhattan once in a while.
