I have read and analyzed two texts related to journalism and interviewing. From both articles we can learn about the life of unusual teenagers – a ballerina and a poker-player. However, although there are two articles with similar purposes and from similar category, we can find a few differences between them. The article by Laurine Gilde looks rather like an interview written down on paper and transferred in the article. It is much smaller than the article by Candyce Cook. Besides, we can see many cases of direct speech, where the main character shares her thoughts, experience, and feelings. The article sometimes resembles a fiction book very much – the author’s style, the structure of the sentences, the word formation chosen by the author. Unlikely, the article about a poker-player looks like a traditional article in a newspaper. It is much longer, it includes several sub-headings. The author devoted much place to telling the story of the young man and explaining his actions. We can see that the journalist has accomplished a good and profound research before creating this article – there are short interviews of the main hero’s friends and fellow players who share their opinion about his hobby. A special part is devoted to the description of the parent’s attitude to such way of living, again with evidence of their interviewing. Besides, the author has investigated the life of the young man and traced it back to 2008 (or maybe even earlier), which presents him as a diligent and good journalist. Frankly speaking, I liked reading the article by Laurine Gilde, but only because it seemed to me like a fictional book about a young girl and her life. But I would give my voice, so to say, to the other article, by Candyce Cook, which can be called a true journalistic work, by all criteria.
No wonder, journalistic profile differs from a traditional essay by its structure and content. In structure it would be rather divided into points and concise sentences, with maximum information and useful data in the text, whereas essay presupposes logical and coherent development of thought without headings. As for the content, a journalistic profile is rather informative and serves to present some information, whereas an essay includes much personal. Of course, there are many other differences between these two genres.
