There are different perspectives regarding gun control, and diverse contexts that either encourage or criticize the possession and use of guns. As the 21st century societies are becoming more violent, partially due to internet media that allows global spread of aggressive behavior that imply gun usage, people around the world are becoming increasingly influenced to carry guns for self – protection. On the other hand, carrying guns also encourage gun violence among civilians, threatening the social and individual security. There is a complex and controversial discussion around gun control, in terms of legislation, the context of carrying and using a gun and the abuse of gun usage that encourages crimes.
Gun control legislation refers to the set of rules that regulates the manufacturing, selling, purchasing, possessing and using firearms by persons who are not in the police or any armed service. While many countries are restrictive to firearm possession by civilians, United States guarantees the right of civilians bearing guns through the Second Amendment. The act of protecting the rights of civilians to possess and use guns is a response of individuals’ needs of self – defense measures. Therefore, the main argument of the Second Amendment is that civilians are entitled to wear guns in order to protect themselves and their families against criminal attacks or oppressive actions. This law is supposed to encourage a safer living environment, as the civilians should feel more secure because they can protect themselves against potential attacks. Nevertheless, the U.S. gun control legislation is criticized for its permissiveness to allowing citizens to carry guns, as it is believed that gun possession is inextricably related to gun abuse, hence, high rates of criminality. It is paradoxically to state that a legislation that permits civilians to bear firearms promotes their safety. Where firearms are allowed, even as protective measures, there gun firing is allowed, hence people instill violence. This is why, gun control should be regulated through more restrictive laws and more severe punishments for abusive usage.
Regarding the conditions of carrying and using guns, legislations, not solely U.S. legislation, are somehow blurred, or easy to manipulate. Civilians who want to purchase and possess guns need to pass various eligibility criteria, among which there are the nationality (being a citizen of the state wherein they live) and psychological soundness. Both of these conditions can be easily violated through illegal gun commercialization, which encourages the increased rates of criminality. Furthermore, what is severely concerning is that mentally unbalanced individuals can have access to guns, and this can lead to suicides, or mass murders, as it has been the case in many places around the world. Considering the increasing numbers of mass shootings that took place in schools around the world in the recent years, the issue of gun possession is correlated with video games or other media related violence. Psychologists suggest that violent media content, like the one available in video games or action movies is considerably serious for youngsters, who are most likely to copy the aggressive behaviors of the characters that they are exposed to. From this perspective, allowing civilians to use firearms creates can encourage teenagers to rebel against their peers or teachers. Furthermore, as it was the case with the recent shootings from Orlando night club, a permissive gun right policy can cause mass shootings also among adults, reflecting hate crimes against vulnerable groups. There are many examples of cases wherein gun possession resulted in abusive usage of firearms and many innocent people lost their lives or were severely injured. In none of these cases, possessing a gun did not help the ones attacked. This is why, gun possession cannot be justified as a measure to promote self – defense. In addition, gun possession should be restricted or more severely regulated, because they can fall in the hands of individuals with evil intentions who can jeopardize the lives of innocent people.
If more people possess guns, it is fairly likely that more people will be using guns. The usage of firearms implies murdering, or seriously injuring human beings. Disputes among individuals have existed since the beginning of mankind and continued throughout the history of humanity. There are various ways to handle such disputes, which includes verbal arguments that can escalate to physical violence, or, using firearms. If individuals carry firearms, the chances that they will use them in simple disputes, which can be handled through a verbal argument or by appealing to police force, can easily escalate to using guns. This is another form of abusively using firearms, which, just like in the case of mass shootings, also leads to killing other people. Taking the life of another person can solely be justified in self – defense situations, but as conflicts arise from simple arguments that can rapidly involve the use of guns, firearms possession and usage should not be encouraged. As a result, gun control regulations that forbid the possession and usage of firearms in public places and limits them to the private sphere, as a way to allow individuals to protect themselves in their own homes, should be introduced.
Gun possession implies a considerable responsibility for the possessor. Nowadays, due to the gun rights policies, and encouraged by the alarming news that mediate cases of mass shootings, more and more people own firearms as a means of protecting themselves. Nevertheless, possessing guns is not the answer to fight against mass shootings, and it is not the solution for guaranteeing safer communities or societies, as this essay demonstrated. Increased gun regulations should be introduced for enhancing the restrictiveness and severity of conditions that allow gun possession, and to forbid the possession and usage of guns in public places, as a means to reduce the criminality rates associated with gun violence.
